Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced a jury has found 31-year-old Matthew R. Gerwitz of City of Tonawanda guilty of one count of murder in the second degree, six counts of attempted murder in the first degree (class "A-I" felonies), two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (class "C" violent felonies) and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree (class "D" felonies).

Kathy Hochul announced the New York Power Authority board of trustees approved more than $1.5 million in funding awards under the Western New York Power Proceeds program to Northland Workforce Training Center and Top Seedz, a Buffalo-based organic food company, designed to spur nearly $9 million in capital investments and support 53 jobs — with 11 of those jobs newly created.

Sophia Brielle Benintende of Williamsville was a fierce, philanthropic 9-year-old girl who bravely fought an aggressive and rare type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Sophia passed away on May 9, after an extraordinarily courageous two-year battle. Her passion for helping others continues to live on through her nonprofit pediatric cancer organization, Sophia the Fierce Inc.
