Officials in the Village of Lewiston are uncertain if the Lewiston Event Center can be converted into a 300-unit self-storage facility. Confusion centers on primary vs. accessory use in a B-1 zoned area, the definition of a warehouse, and what the codebook allows as it pertains to permitted stowage.

Grand Island Town Board to hold a public hearing on breaching tax cap

The Grand Island Town Board has set a public hearing to discuss the tax cap for 8 p.m. Oct. 17 in Grand Island Town Hall. In addition, the Town Board has scheduled two workshop meetings to be held to discuss the 2023 town budget. These meetings will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 17 and 11:15 a.m. Oct. 19.

Red Brick reopens, as mold is mitigated

New York State Commissioner of Education Dr. Betty A. Rosa and members of the New York State Education Department made a visit to the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District, specifically to the Tuscarora Indian School. The goal of the stop was to meet with the members of the Tuscarora Council, tour the school, and inspect the beginning of school improvements that have started thanks to monies from New York state totaling $11.8 million.

Flu shot clinic to be held at Golden Age Center

The Grand Island Golden Age Center, at 3278 Whitehaven Road, will host a flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. The clinic is "a community event that's open to the public right here on Grand Island," explained Jen Menter, recreation supervisor of the center. The flu shots will be administered by Walgreen's employees.
UPDATED: Village of Lewiston's Red Brick Municipal Building closed for cleaning

The building - which also includes a basement gymnasium and a second-floor suite of offices and fitness studios - closed to the public at 8 a.m. Monday. It is still being tested as of this publication. Results are due sometime around Oct. 13.

Included in their discussions was the 2023 proposed town budget; a public hearing on a revised site plan for the LMK Realty Associates' Northridge Drive proposed subdivision; a presentation by the Niagara Military Affairs Council; and this season's plans for the Lewiston Family Ice Rink in Academy Park.

Autumn and local history on display at Kelly's Country Store

The colors, produce and fun of autumn were celebrated last weekend with a fall festival at Kelly's Country Store. Children enjoyed pony rides, as well as opportunities to feed llamas and other animals, as well as to view turtles, snapping dragons and assorted creatures. Food trucks offered a variety of foods for sale for all visitors.

Village of Lewiston to replace white fencing along Center Street

Sandy Dugan gets ride of a lifetime

As the blueberry-colored jet boat circled around the Devil's Hole gorge class five rapids, Sandy Dugan began to cry what she called "tears of joy." Strapped in a red lifejacket, gripping the handlebar above her seat cushion, Dugan looked out on the Niagara River from this vantage point for the first time in her 84 years. Taking it all in as the vessel gently rocked up and down, she proclaimed, "This is every bit as exciting as Alaska." As the jet boat picked up steam and ascended its highest crest, Dugan exclaimed, "I'm so glad we did that. It was wonderful!"
Frontier House interior specs delivered, awaiting approval

Lewiston architect Jim Fittante recently presented the Village of Lewiston with interior designs for what is now being labeled "The Historic Frontier House." He submitted a conceptual site plan for 460 Center St. - including floor plans, fire protection, plumbing, mechanical and electric - on behalf of Ellicott Development.
