The Grand Island Board of Education was looking skyward at its Dec. 12 meeting, held at Kaegebein Elementary School. Superintendent Dr. Brian Graham suggested the School District begin early with plans for a total solar eclipse, which is scheduled to occur April 8, 2024.

A proposed bed and breakfast on Amberwood Drive that, for more than a year, had generated opposition among the neighbors of Cherrish and Matthew Beals, will be able to open to guests. The Grand Island Town Board granted the proposal a renewal of its special use permit with a list of conditions at its Dec. 5 meeting.

The Thai Buddhist temple and retreat center at 2661 Bedell Road (the Wat Prodketchettharam of America) and Riverside-Salem Environmental Chapel, 3449 West River Road, have been working together to plant trees at both sites.

An early morning fire on Nov. 30 ravaged 744, 746 and 748 Center St., the site of The Vintage Barber, Soully Created and Sue's Frame of Mind. In battling the blaze, first responders from Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 and members from a half-dozen supporting companies had to break glass, pull off siding, cut into the roof and pump in copious amounts of water.

The New York State Department of Transportation has denied the Village of Lewiston's request to lower the speed limit on Center Street from 30 mph to 25 mph.

For several weeks, Village of Lewiston trustees have been debating what to do with "sandwich boards" promoting Lewiston businesses. They relaxed municipal laws pertaining to A-frame posts at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and have continued to permit the markers - particularly noting the need to direct people to slightly off-Center Street retailers Sgt. Peppers Hot Sauces and Brewed and Bottled Craft Beer Shop.

Despite bitter cold temperatures, myriad residents and visitors lined Center Street Sunday evening to watch the second annual Lewiston Christmas Lights Parade. The roughly 60-minute event featured colorful floats, dancers, first responders and local leaders doing their part to make the season, well, brighter.

"Christmas in the Village" returns Saturday, Dec. 10, to Youngstown, with plenty of holiday merry-making activities in store. It runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Youngstown Red Brick School Village Center, 240 Lockport St., and throughout the village. The Village of Youngstown presents the event with assistance from the Youngstown Business and Professional Association and local merchants.

Despite high winds and wet, rainy conditions, Santa Claus did arrive safely in Lewiston on Saturday, to continue participating in Christmas Walk weekend events. Jolly Old St. Nicholas was scheduled to appear from inside his float in the International Peace Garden but, as the weather wasn't cooperative, opted to greet children and families from inside Deal Realty (451 Center St.)

The proposed town tax cap override in the 2023 budget is being driven by a large increase in interest rates on $24 million borrowed by the town over a number of years. This includes $12 million borrowed to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows, explained Pam Barton, supervising accountant for the Town of Grand Island.

Many college students that are on their way to graduate college experience a second time of decision making: The decision to complete another year in graduate school or start looking for other options. Students that have earned a four-year degree must decide whether they are willing to spend more time, money and effort on another year of school. They must ask themselves if it is worth the hard work.

Hot, Spicy and Red are the pronouns for Korean food. The image of loud red is mainly used for describing Korean food. Koreans have a special affection for spicy food to the extent that they are known as combatants for their spicy taste. The reason is in the hot regions of summer in Korea eating a lot of peppers is common.

Being a college student can be very stressful, and for good reason. There are several factors that contribute to this. These include pressure to do well in school, having a job, participating in sports and activities, getting enough sleep, taking care of yourself and your family, etc. Especially with finals just around the corner, students are more agitated than ever.

Through recent years, college students have been on quite the roller-coaster ride. In the spring semester of 2020, coronavirus arrived and created a rift that will be difficult to soon forget. A lengthy list of colleges was forced to close their doors and send their residents home, changing their learning as they knew it. When it was time for students to return for the next semester, in fall 2020, everything was different.

On Friday, Oct. 21, Taylor Swift released her 10th studio album, "Midnights," about 13 sleepless nights from throughout her life. It is already taking to the charts. While promoting the album in her interview with Jimmy Fallon, Swift referred to herself as a "geriatric popstar" when asked about her age.

Following the coronavirus pandemic, mental health has become a growing concern, especially for young adults and college-aged people. Adjusting to college life is stressful enough in itself, so adding on the stress of the pandemic, more students reported having mental health problems. The need for counseling services or other mental health services continues to rise for this age group.
