Sanborn Area Historical Society Farm Museum reopening

The Sanborn Historical Society will reopen the Sanborn Farm Museum for small tours of 10 or less people. It will open from 2-4 p.m. May 16 (third Sunday of May), June 20 and July 18. Masks and social distancing are required.

Niagara County Veterans Service Agency to resume appointments in Niagara Falls

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski announced the Veterans Service Agency would begin in-person office hours at the Trott Access Center in Niagara Falls beginning next week. The office has been closed during the pandemic and all appointments since then have been conducted in the Lockport office.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis Club will host its May Day basket raffle from 1-3 p.m. May 1. The event will be outside at the Lions 5 Senses Park located at 6535 Ward Road, in the Town of Wheatfield. Attendees can purchase a sheet of 25 tickets for $5. The winning names will begin to be drawn at 3 p.m. Winners need not be in attendance.
AG James, DEC Commissioner Seggos secure $4 million to resolve hazardous waste, oil spill contamination in Tonawanda

New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced a $4 million agreement they said "resolves years of hazardous waste disposal and oil spill contamination at the former Tonawanda Forge site in Tonawanda, New York." The agreement stipulates that American Axle & Manufacturing agrees to compensate the state of New York for costs associated with the state's cleanup of contamination at the site.

The North Tonawanda High School multiclass reunion committee met April 15 to determine whether or not to hold the annual event. With the pandemic and its concerns, testing, social distancing and adhering to state mandates, it was decided in the best interest of all to not hold the event this year.
Niagara County DMV has walk-in hours for residents only

Reacting to an overwhelming number of people who showed up for the Niagara County Department of Motor Vehicles' first walk-in hours since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said future walk-in hours would be limited to Niagara County residents only, with a limit of two transactions per visit.

Jeffery Grace, M.D., was appointed to the medical staff at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where he will serve as a psychiatrist for outpatient behavioral health services. Memorial Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Vijay Bojedla, M.D., announced the appointment.
NWCSD sets expenditure budget and tax levy limit

The ballot is taking shape in the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District for the annual budget vote to be held Tuesday, May 18. The Board of Education recently passed motions setting its expenditure budget for the 2021-22 school year at $79,222,507, and the tax levy limit to $34,720,519 - an increase of 1.99% from last year. Both motions were passed unanimously.

NCCC Film & Animation Festival to offer free workshops

The Town of Niagara Board unanimously voted Wednesday to rescind its approval of an asphalt project it had approved on July 21, 2020. The move comes amid significant public outcry to the project and pushback from neighboring communities. The facility was planned to be built at 4660 Witmer Road, near Niagara University's southern entrance.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding a public comment period regarding an air quality permit filed on behalf of a proposed asphalt plant for 4660 Witmer Road in the Town of Niagara. Written comments may be sent to Kerri L. Pickard-DePriest at DEC Region 9 Headquarters, 270 Michigan Ave., Buffalo, NY 14203. The deadline for comment recently was extended to May 3.

Niagara County clerk: Driver's license expiration extended again

Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski on Wednesday said Gov. Andrew Cuomo has issued executive order 202.97, which extends the expiration dates on licenses and permits that expired after March 1, 2020, to April 16, 2021. At this time, all transactions must be done by appointment only, although Jastrzemski said his office is working to change that next month.

$3.36 million in Greenway funds for Veterans Memorial Park project

On Tuesday, the Host Community Standing Committee (HCSC), which administers and oversees projects financed by the Niagara River Greenway Recreation/Tourism Fund, awarded $3.36 million to Veterans Memorial Community Park in the Town of Niagara. The funds will be used to cover phases III and IV of the park's master plan. The project was deemed consistent with the principles of the Niagara Greenway by the Greenway Commission on March 3.

Late Tuesday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a fire inside the lower residence at 2954 Niagara Falls Blvd., in the Town of Wheatfield. NCSO deputies responded and observed heavy smoke coming from inside the building.
Niagara County summer youth employment program now accepting applications

Niagara County Employment & Training announced applications are being accepted for the department's summer youth employment program (SYEP). In order to be considered for the program, applicants must be a county resident, be between 14-20 years-old (must turn 14 by May 14 and cannot turn 21 until after Aug. 27), and meet income guidelines.
