A new safety requirement heads to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's desk to be signed, and requires passengers 16 and up to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a motor vehicle - including passengers of ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft.

The City of North Tonawanda has been working with the Lumber City Development Corp on a strategy called "NT Momentum." The plan is currently in phase one of its master plan for the 546-acre study area that includes properties downtown and River Road.

On Tuesday night at North Tonawanda's Common Council Meeting, Mayor Arthur Pappas commented on the lack of communication between officials in the City of North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda, in regard to the upcoming Canal Fest, an annual summer festival featuring rides, games and fireworks on the border of the two cities overlooking the Erie Canal.

Yesterday, students from North Tonawanda High School were due to leave their books, papers and pens in the classroom, and get their hands dirty at the North Tonawanda Botanical Gardens on Sweeney Street, where Dave Conti and the rest of the North Tonawanda Botanical Gardens Organization had some serious lessons to impart.

Republican Assemblymen Jake Ashby and Angelo Morinello, both veterans themselves, held the first "Voices for Veterans" event at the Niagara Falls VFW Post 917. They called for the immediate restoration of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's planned $5.68 million cuts to veterans' services.

This past Monday, the manager of the Wheatfield Gardens greenhouses, Paal Eflstrum, came in front of the Town Board of Wheatfield to update the board members on some of the changes he had made on the border - as documented in a letter to the town - with the Timberlakes subdivision, and asked the board for further instructions on how to be "good neighbors."

North Tonawanda's Common Council Meeting began with the "State of the City" address by Mayor Arthur Pappas. The subjects of focus for the address included development, jobs, highway and water projects, as well as the bail and discovery/speedy trial reform laws enacted at the beginning of the year by the state.

In last year's elections, Lee Wallace ran for his second term as supervisor in the Town of Niagara unopposed by any candidates for the position. The hometown politician, who said he never wanted to be a politician, is now in his fifth year of working for the town as its head.

The Kaleida Health DeGraff Memorial Tower in North Tonawanda, formerly used for inpatient care, has been listed with Pyramid Brokerage Co. to attract a developer to fill the five-story building. Some of the property's highlights, according to Pyramid, include easy access to the I-290 and its suitability for redevelopment, as well as it being ideal for multi-family residence and affordable housing.

A crowd - standing room only - faced North Tonawanda officials at the Jan. 7 public hearing for the proposed changes to the city's sanitation program. Several residents approached the board with deep objections to the recommendations proposed by Niagara County Environmental Science Coordinator Dawn Timm and DPW Superintendent Mark Zellner.

The Town of Niagara Business & Professional Association is hosting its annual Awards Dinner for 2019 honorees on Jan. 29 at the Four Points Sheraton, 7001 Buffalo Ave. in Niagara Falls. All proceeds will go to the TNBPA Scholarship fund to help families offset the cost of college.

Bob Heisner teaches Bushido at his building on Niagara Falls Blvd. He became proficient in the martial art through a blending of six different disciplines that he learned while serving in the military during and after the Vietnam War. He said the process of training doesn't just help muscles, it stays with the student and gives the self-determination and will to become whatever it is they aspire to become.

The concept was simple. Find a rock, decorate it, then hide it again. Soon, someone else will find it and take a picture, then hide it, too. A fun game in cities across the U.S. hit WNY in 2017 when Kimberly LaRussa, a local blogger of a website called Sweet Buffalo, was introduced to it by a friend in Florida. She said it seemed like a fun activity for the long winter, but couldn't have imagined what it would become.

Animal welfare advocates from the Voices for Shelter Animals group spoke out recently in regard to an investigation conducted at the Niagara SPCA by former Erie County SPCA Executive Director Barbara Carr, and Libby Post, executive director of New York State Animal Protection Federation. They called it a conflict of interest.

Eric Salisbury was appointed dog control officer in 2018 for the City of North Tonawanda. Since then, he's become something of a legend for the dog- and cat-loving community in the municipality. Recently, after several residents commended his service, the NT City Council awarded him a pay increase.

The program is called the BTOP Express - Better Technology, Onsite and Personal. It provides general computer training throughout the NIOGA Library System. At a recent Town Board meeting in Wheatfield, Sara Taylor, a BTOP e-mobile trainer, spoke to Supervisor Don MacSwan and councilmen regarding bringing the program to the residents, despite the town's lack of a library.

The Carnegie Art Center hosted a big night this past Thursday for its annual "Art off the Wall" event. The largest wall was covered with small 5-by-7-inch pieces of art, while the space also contained a room dedicated to 12-by-12-inch canvases and even tinted glass that were bid on silently by artists' fans.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, the Town of Niagara Lions and Lionesses will lay wreathes at Witmer Cemetery on the graves of the veterans buried there. They will honor the five branches of the military by displaying wreaths for them, as well. There are soldiers from each of the wars from 1812 on up through Korea.

The North Tonawanda mayor's office, in conjunction with the city's Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks, reported entries are currently being accepted for the city's "Decorate for the holidays contest." The contest is open to any North Tonawanda resident who decorates their home or business for the holiday season.
