NYPA announces temporary closure of Niagara Power Vista Visitors Center & fishing facilities

The New York Power Authority on Thursday announced the temporary closure of the Niagara Power Vista Visitors Center and NYPA fishing facilities, including the fishing pier at the base of the Robert Moses Dam.

Niagara County announces completion of Porter Center Road Bridge project

Niagara County Legislator Irene Myers on Wednesday announced the replacement of the Porter Center Road Bridge over 6 Mile Creek in the Town of Porter is complete and the road will reopen to traffic by the end of the day, this Thursday, Nov. 12. The bridge, located just south of Braley Road, has been closed since July.

On Thursday evening before an empty Town Hall board room, the Lewiston Town Board held two public hearings - one on the town's $18,353,414 preliminary budget plan, and on a second to consider approval of a one-year contact for the fire protection districts.

Mondays are normally a day of virtual learning for all students in the hybrid model. With the Veterans Day holiday on Wednesday, there will be no virtual day this week. Hybrid students in the green group will be on campus on Monday and Tuesday, while students in the white group will be on campus Thursday and Friday. The district will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

Red Brick Museum growing in Lewiston

This has been a big year for acquisitions and received donations. The museum collection has now tripled in size. Earlier this year, I acquired some local artwork from the Cary and Baker estate collections. Also, another signed print from Thomas Hanover, along with some other rare engravings, which are on display in the village boardroom.

The Town of Lewiston Senior Center will host its Thanksgiving Day get-together (a hearty turkey dinner luncheon with all the trimmings) at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at its Lower River Road site. The Niagara County Board of Elections will be open expanded hours for absentee balloting ahead of the Nov. 3 general election: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 21-22; Monday, Oct. 26, and Wednesday, Oct. 28; and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 24 and 31.

Lewiston-Porter celebrates the return of sports to our campus. For the fall season, varsity/JV soccer (boys/girls), varsity golf (boys/girls), varsity tennis (girls), and varsity cross-country (boys/girls) are all on. Athletics move forward in a limited fashion, in alignment with the Niagara Frontier League and following strict state guidelines.
Fire at Niagara Frontier Country Club

On Wednesday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a phone call from an alarm company stating a fire alarm was activated at the Niagara Frontier Country Club. Deputies and fire fighters responded to the scene and reported smoke coming from the main building at the country club. Once inside, it was the discovered there was a fire coming from kitchen area of the country club.

Blessing of animals in Youngstown

Pets, and their owners, are invited to a special "drive-in" blessing of the animals in the parking lot adjacent to St. John's Episcopal Church, Main and Chestnut streets in Youngstown. The event will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. The Rev. Canon Barbara Price will mark the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, with this special event. Everyone is welcome to attend.
