Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz joined Erie County District Attorney John Flynn, Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard, Buffalo Police Department Deputy Commissioner Joe Gramaglia, Commissioner of Erie County Central Police Services James Jancewicz, Chairman of the Board of Crime Stoppers of WNY Frank Christiano, and Dan Denz of the Erie County Chiefs of Police Association on Tuesday to announce a new initiative to raise community awareness regarding the increased firearm-related violence occurring across the region and in Buffalo.

The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. Nationwide, more than 7,038 people died in crashes involving teen drivers during the "100 Deadliest Days" over a 10-year period from 2010-19. That's more than seven people a day each summer.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation (S.448/A.2014) allowing veterans to qualify for state benefits after a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, a traumatic brain injury or disclosure of military sexual trauma from any person licensed to provide health care services in New York. Previously, veterans had to be diagnosed by a provider at the Department of Veteran Affairs.

In 2020, seven organizations joined together to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Le Magazin Royal, a French trading post located where Artpark stands today. Part of that commemoration involved the creation of a limited number of custom-designed medallions. Production was delayed due to the pandemic, but each organization recently received a medallion at the site of the early 18th century trading post.

In order to help FeedMore WNY replenish its depleted supply of donated food, the nonprofit's board of directors and community ambassador council are encouraging the community to support the upcoming "Spread the Love" peanut butter drives. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance on Monday reminded taxpayers who have yet to file their tax returns that the deadline to do so is Monday, May 17. To date, the department has processed more than 9 million returns and issued 4.7 million refunds. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced large-scale outdoor event venues will only be limited by the space available for patrons or parties of patrons to maintain the required social distance of 6 feet starting May 19. This will apply to outdoor sports, performing arts and live entertainment, and horse and auto racing venues statewide. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed an extension of the COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2020 and the COVID-19 Emergency Protect Our Small Businesses Act. The legislation (S.6362-A/A.7175-A) extends protections prohibiting residential and commercial evictions, foreclosure proceedings, credit discrimination and negative credit reporting related to the COVID-19 pandemic until Aug. 31.

Catholic Charities of Buffalo announced HOPE Day, the annual 24-hour match challenge day of giving to benefit Appeal 2021, is set for Friday, May 14, across Western New York. The first $40,000 raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar, with gifts from donors who wish to remain anonymous, in the ongoing effort to reach the annual Appeal's $10 million goal in support of Catholic Charities and the "Fund for the Faith."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced the reopening of the Historic Palace Theatre on Saturday, May 1, following a $3.5 million renovation that received $600,000 through Lockport's Downtown Revitalization Initiative award. Work on the nearly century-old structure included installing new seating, floors and a larger orchestra pit, as well as other interior improvements aimed at ensuring the future vibrancy of this community cornerstone.
