Niagara County wins Diamond Award for landfill project

Legislator Mike Hill announced Niagara County has won a 2021 Diamond Award in the environmental category from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC) for the Niagara County Landfill No. 1 improvement project. Hill and Environmental Coordinator Dawn Timm made a presentation on the award at Tuesdays night's meeting of the County Legislature.

Six Flags Darien Lake announced an all-new holiday tradition, the "Magic of Lights" drive-thru experience. The theme park will be all decked out and shining bright from Nov. 19 through Jan. 2, 2022. Tremendous work has taken place inside - out of view from the general public - with great expectations in place for what might be when The Chapel reopens the site in the near future.

Hochul signs animal welfare legislative package

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a legislative package relating to animal welfare. Legislation S.4254/A.4075 prohibits insurers from refusing to issue or renew, cancel, or charge or impose an increased premium for certain policies based solely on the breed of dog owned. Legislation S.5023A/A.5823-A requires veterinarians to report suspected animal cruelty.
Hochul signs legislation targeting those who pass a school bus

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday signed legislation S.4661/A.7330 that provides for the transfer of a portion of fines issued for illegally passing a school bus to the comprehensive school bus driver safety training program for the study and promotion of issues involving school bus safety, establishing a school bus motorist education fund. This legislation aims to discourage motorists from illegally passing stopped school buses thus increasing safety to school children.

Oh deer! New York deer crashes peak in autumn

New York drivers need to buck up this fall and watch for animals on the roads. AAA analyzed New York crash data and found that October, November and December are by far the peak months for animal crashes, notably deer, in the Empire State. There were 33,956 animal-related crashes statewide in 2020 - the second-highest level in the past decade - that's equivalent to one animal-related crash every 16 minutes.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski hosted a brief ceremony on Tuesday to open a display of the Niagara County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and the "Our Photo Album" exhibit featuring photos taken by Vietnam veterans during their tours of duty. The display will be open at least through Veteran's Day (Thursday, Nov. 11) at the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday signed legislation (S.64/A.1524) establishing a statewide restaurant meals program as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The legislation mandates the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to apply for USDA approval to authorize the program, which would allow homeless, elderly and disabled SNAP recipients to use their benefits for prepared or hot food from participating restaurants
