Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz was joined Friday by Erie County Legislature Chair April N.M. Baskin (2nd district) and legislators Howard Johnson (1st district) and Lisa Chimera (3rd district) as he signed the Erie County Health Equity Act of 2021 into law. Local Law Intro. No. 3-1-2021 creates an office of health equity within the Erie County Health Department.

For Natalie Barnhard and her dream of opening a recovery center for people who have a spinal cord injury, all the right puzzle pieces fell into place at the right time. The Natalie Barnhard Center for Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation and Recovery opened in Buffalo this fall, welcoming clients who would otherwise have to travel hundreds of miles to find a similar place to work out and, perhaps just as important, bond with other spinal cord injured clients.

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection on Friday issued a consumer alert about the dangers of carbon monoxide and fire hazards in extreme cold weather. The winter months pose the most risk for these hazards - as the temperatures drop, consumers may turn to dangerous heating alternatives to stay warm. Propane heaters, generators, space heaters and/or outdoor grills all pose lethal risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards when used improperly.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits overnight, and a wind chill advisory is in effect in some areas. AAA is preparing for an increase in call volume, especially for dead batteries, as temperatures fall. Call volume in the Buffalo metro area on Monday exceeded a typical January day with the majority of calls for battery issues.

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island thanks the hundreds of individuals and organizations who contributed to our successful 2021 holiday distribution. Fifty-four of your neighbor families were helped with food baskets and, where appropriate, gift cards for their children. Eighty of our seniors were also helped in two senior apartment complexes.

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry announced the closure of the Times Beach Nature Preserve. This action follow's last weekend's windy weather and the seiche it created caused damage to the preserve's trails, creating safety concerns and forcing the preserve's closure to the public. It is the latest of several weather-related closures of Times Beach due to seiche events since the October 2019 storm.

The Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN) is awarding a $4,500 conservation treatment grant to the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University to conserve a Joachim Ferdinand Richardt painting of the Niagara River from the museum's permanent collection. The artwork has never been publicly displayed, because of its poor condition when first acquired.

U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and Congressman Brian Higgins on Monday visited the site of a future Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority charging station in Buffalo, to discuss the opportunities the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act ("bipartisan infrastructure law") can deliver to American communities and workers. The NFTA operates bus, light rail and airport transportation in Western New York, supporting 1,600 jobs in the Buffalo-Niagara Region.

Family Promise of WNY (FPWNY), an emergency family homeless shelter, is "desperate" for community support in securing a van to transport the children and parents it serves. Two weeks ago, the FPWNY 12-passenger van was in a serious accident. The van has been deemed a total loss by an insurance company.
