D'Youville President Lorrie A. Clemo, Ph.D., and the board of trustees on Friday announced an extraordinary milestone in the 113-year-old history of the institution. D'Youville has been granted university status by the New York State Board of Regents and is now designated as D'Youville University. Touro College and Utica College were also approved for university designation.

In February 2020, a month before the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a nationwide lockdown and months of virtual education, Grand Island High School presented the musical "Beauty and the Beast." None of the performers or their teachers had any idea that it would be two years before another musical would be produced at the high school.

We are moving ahead on COVID-19, the masks are off (hopefully for good), and a number of neat things are on the horizon - the approach of spring, the thoughts of nicer weather, and a whole slew of exciting things to look forward to this summer.

Malini Suchak, Ph.D., along with Christy Hoffman, Ph.D., as a collaborator, received a $12,280 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to improve the lives of cats surrendered to shelters. Suchak and Hoffman are associate professors of animal behavior, ecology and conservation (ABEC).

On Wednesday evening, the Lewiston-Porter School District hosted a ribbon-cutting for its new LEVEL gallery. Located at the Center for the Arts at Lewiston-Porter High School, the new art space will operate under the direction of the art department. It will serve as the new home for the annual district art show, in addition to showcasing student artwork throughout the year and hosting community events.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday signed legislation S.4661/A.7330 that provides for the transfer of a portion of fines issued for illegally passing a school bus to the comprehensive school bus driver safety training program for the study and promotion of issues involving school bus safety, establishing a school bus motorist education fund. This legislation aims to discourage motorists from illegally passing stopped school buses thus increasing safety to school children.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced 25 new #VaxtoSchool pop-up vaccination sites to increase vaccination rates among school-aged New Yorkers. On Sept. 21, she announced a total of 120 sites will take place over a 12-week period statewide. To date, 86 sites have been established.

National Teen Driver Safety Week is underway, running from Oct. 17-24. Now is the time for parents to talk with teen drivers about the importance of safety behind the wheel. Recent AAA research shows that more than 60% of teens got their driver's license before the age of 18. Young drivers need training to understand the rules of the road.
