Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined Monday by the Doyle Hose Co. No. 1 Chief Don Szumigala, representatives of the Erie County Emergency Services department, Firemen's Association of the State of New York President Ken Pienkowski, and volunteer firefighters from local districts at Doyle Hose Co. No. 1 on William Street in Cheektowaga to kick off the seventh annual "RecruitNY" campaign.
Tears for Fears books return engagement at Artpark

Artpark fans received welcomed news on Monday, as Artpark & Company announced a return engagement with Tears for Fears. The band will perform in the Outdoor Amphitheater on Wednesday, June 14. Tickets, starting at $17, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday.
Smelt Festival kicks off summer season in Lewiston

The Village of Lewiston's first festival of the season, the Smelt Festival, will take place on Cinco de Mayo, Friday, May 5. The rain-or-shine event will begin at 5 p.m. at the corner of Center and North Water streets, and is expected to draw hundreds of hungry visitors, as it has in years past.

Deputy Treasurer Edward Walker had welcome news for the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees on Monday. Thanks to an increase in property assessments, trustees can maintain the current tax rate - $7.38 per $1,000 of assessed valuation - and use less of the municipality's reserves.

On Thursday, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission board officially announced the selection of Kenneth N. Bieger to succeed Lew Holloway as the organization's next general manager, effective May 1. Bieger currently serves as chief financial officer for the NFBC and brings more than 35 years of professional management experience to the general manager position.

A demolition crew is wasting no time tearing down the former Fairchild Manor Nursing Home site on Onondaga Street in Lewiston. An entire wing was removed on Monday, and enormous piles of metal, concrete, wood and brick were sorted and removed on Tuesday.
