Lewiston Council on the Arts regretfully announces the cancelation of this year's summer events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Bug Fest," the "Summer of '69," the "Blue Monday" concert series and the Lewiston Art Festival and KeyBank Chalk Walk Competition will return in 2021.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, which is typically the official kickoff to our busy summer season, I know that we are all feeling a sense of anxiousness and fear about the outlook of our industry. Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. (ECHDC) and Be Our Guest are encouraging visitors to the Buffalo Waterfront to engage in responsible recreation during the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis. Their recommendations incorporate guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State Department of Health for reducing the spread of infectious diseases. They encourage everyone to "enjoy local recreation areas while, practicing social distancing and using common sense to protect themselves and others."

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday announced that, beginning Thursday, May 21, religious gatherings of no more than 10 people will be allowed statewide where strict social distancing measures are enforced and all participants wear masks. Additionally, drive-in and parking lot services will also be allowed beginning Thursday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday said Western New York will enter into phase one of his "New York Forward" reopening on Tuesday. Nonessential services have been closed since March 20, when Cuomo put "New York State on PAUSE" to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Lewiston native, artist and entrepreneur Michael LaDuca recently created an online campaign to support local businesses. He raised funds through a GoFundMe initiative, where, for a $50 donation, people could purchase an 11-by-39 print of his famed Lewiston landscape watercolor photo.

As part of a "Salute to WNY," a 914th Air Refueling Wing KC-135 from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and three F-35 fighter wings from the Vermont National Guard flew over parts of Western New York on Tuesday to salute frontline COVID-19 health care workers, essential employees and emergency responders. The planes were slated to fly over almost a dozen-and-a-half medical locations throughout the late morning.

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced an agreement with Zoom Video Communications that will provide security protections for more than 200 million users on the platform. New security measures are being put in place to support and protect consumers, students, schools, governments, religious institutions and private companies using the application for work, education, prayer and socializing.

Dozens of people were out and about in the Village of Lewiston enjoying the summer-like weather. They were walking down Center Street, eating on picnic tables and sitting on benches, looking at monuments, licking ice cream in Academy Park, and sprawled out on Water Street, looking out on the river. Many of those people were not wearing a mask or cloth face covering.

The Buffalo History Museum has launched a new initiative to collect the stories of the community amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. All stories will be preserved in the museum's archives and become part of its collection. A press release said, "The community's contributions ensure evidence of this time for future research, reference, projects, exhibits, and programs."

Everything about this year's Best Fish Fry contest was different - except the winner. For the third year in a row, Apple Granny Restaurant battered, I mean bested, the competition. The Village of Lewiston restaurant once again garnered the most votes (and the most voters) to take the title.

"One thing that we can offer right now is the cloth masks. Last week, we offered those free cloth masks through Niagara County Department of Emergency Management to businesses who needed to give them to their essential workers. We would now like to open that up to all of our area businesses. We gave out over 15,000 masks in the last week through that program. And we now want to offer this to businesses who are starting about their reopening process, and will need them for all of their employees most likely when that occurs."

Students at Niagara County Community College are still adjusting to a new normal during the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual learning has replaced in-person instruction, and plans for major milestones like commencement are being postponed in order to keep the community safe and healthy.

After seeing a post on Facebook about a donation to Mount St. Mary's from Brickyard Pub & BBQ, Californian Rosemary Miklitsch reached out to the Lewiston restaurant to match the previous donation of 250 meals. As it turns out, Rosemary grew up in Lewiston, and her grandfather, Dr. George Berry, was a doctor at MSM many years ago. Rosemary's parents also received care at Mount St. Mary's.

Beginning today, WellNow Urgent Care is offering two types of COVID-19 testing at its Western New York facilities: molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and blood antibody serology testing. Individuals who have or recently had COVID-19 symptoms are eligible to receive the tests. Tests are available seven days a week with no appointment needed.

A week ago, The Billoni family and Colvin Cleaners announced they were bringing back their tailors and seamstresses who were laid off due to COVID-19 to make reusable, washable face masks for their customers and local nonprofit agencies. Within an hour of this announcement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced everyone in New York is required to wear a facemask when out in public.

Personnel from Upper Mountain Fire Co., Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1, Youngstown Fire Co., Tri Community Ambulance, Ransomville Fire Co., Cambria Fire Co., Lewiston Police Department and the Niagara County Sheriff's Department held an "Appreciation Parade" Saturday evening for Mount St. Mary's health care workers. Lights were flashing with cheers and sirens sounding for hospital staff as the procession moved through the main parking lot as a sign of gratitude for those keeping the community safe and healthy.

Facing an unprecedented spike in unemployment insurance applications related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York State Department of Labor and the New York State Office of Information Technology Services today announced a "tech surge" in partnership with Google Cloud, Deloitte and Verizon to improve the reliability of the state's online and telephone-based unemployment insurance application systems. The "tech surge" will include critical upgrades to the Department of Labor's technology systems that will increase its capacity to accept and process applications, making it easier for New Yorkers to apply for benefits.
