Visitors and residents of the River Region are certainly fortunate when it comes to the number and variety of experiences available in the area. From the arts to fantastic fishing, jet boats to wine trails, the living history of Old Fort Niagara to the high-caliber entertainment at Artpark, the countless festivals and so much more, nary a day goes by without something new, exciting and enjoyable for visitors as well as locals to partake in.

Tens of thousands of people have watched one or more shows at Artpark this summer. Few have had an opportunity to actually be in one - that was until Thursday night. Plasticiens Volants' "Pearl: Secrets of the Sea" made its U.S. debut at Artpark in Lewiston.

Gates officially close on record-breaking 180th Erie County Fair

The all-time attendance record for the Erie County Fair was shattered as the "Best 12 Days of Summer" in Western New York concluded Sunday night. Final 2019 attendance is 1,238,456. This number represents a 3.3% increase from 2018 and makes 2019's number the highest attended County Fair in the history of the Erie County Agricultural Society. The previous all-time record was achieved in 2014 (1,220,101).

Seneca Gaming Corp. officials invited the media to tour the hotel side of Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino on Thursday. They officially unveiled a $40 million renovation of the Seneca Niagara Event Center, hotel front entrance and mezzanine, and The Lobby Bar. Outside, the grounds have new landscaping and statues, additional lanes of traffic, new parking lots, and a brand-new staging area for outdoor concerts.

Old Fort Niagara is hosting its final reenactment of the season, the "War of 1812 Encampment," on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at the National Historic Landmark in Youngstown. This encampment portrays the British attack on Fort Niagara during the American occupation in December 1813, and includes a special evening battle and daily activities for all.

Strates sets single-day record at Erie County Fair

The James E. Strates Shows announced that it has reached an all-time, single day gross revenue record at the Erie County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 10. This single day milestone was just one day of a record-breaking opening weekend in Hamburg, as the Strates Shows celebrates its 95th year providing the amusements at the Erie County Fair. Gross revenues for the Strates Shows midway are trending 25% over 2018 number.

Sarah McLachlan returned to Artpark to perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The musical icon, Lilith Fair creator and Sarah McLachlan School of Music founder was, per usual, vocally dynamic, making for a memorable occasion. As she did in 2014, McLachlan shared stories, explained song origins and thanked fans for supporting her now 31-year career.

While such drugs can be effective in treating acute infections, they have had little clinical effect on the patient population as a whole: The disease remains the third-most-common cause of death in the U.S., and death rates have doubled since 1970.

Artpark's "Tuesdays in the Park" concert this week was definitely weird. Not weird as in strange, but weird as in Al Yankovic. He brought his "Strings Attached" tour to Lewiston - complete with a top-notch backing band, a 41-piece orchestra, numerous video packages, and, of course, unique costume changes.

The Breast Cancer Network of WNY (BCN), in collaboration with the Buffalo Bisons and Amherst Federal Credit Union, will present the third annual "Strike Out Breast Cancer" event on Saturday, Aug. 3. This family-friendly event includes a two-hour pre-game party downtown at Cathedral Park, a short breast cancer awareness walk to Sahlen Field, and admission to that evening's Buffalo Bisons baseball game.

A smaller but peppier Artpark crowd was treated to the most fun concert of the 2019 "Tuesdays in the Park" concert series this week. Sugar Ray, Better Than Ezra and Emerson Hart of Tonic had people on their feet, singing and dancing along to some of the 1990's biggest hits.
