The Greater Niagara Ballet Company staged its annual production of "The Nutcracker" over the weekend at the Niagara Falls High School Performing Arts Center. The family-centric production was directed by Beverley Feder and Julie Traver, and starred local dance students (and their parents, too).

Near the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail, in Maine, hikers walk through a wilderness that stretches unbroken for 100 miles. It is called the One Hundred Mile Wilderness. Jeff Bullock, 32, a Grand Island High School graduate, who hiked the entire 2,190 miles of the Appalachian Trail in six months, described the wilderness as "peaceful."

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry has announced the return of Santa Land to Chestnut Ridge Park. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10. The Parks Department is partnering with the Chestnut Ridge Conservancy and the Town of Orchard Park Recreation Department again this year to present the popular weekend event, which features free family activities to brighten the holiday spirit.

While most college students were sound asleep Tuesday morning, Justin Crawford woke up early to volunteer at Community Missions of Niagara Frontier. By 6:15 a.m., the Niagara University junior and several of his peers were clad in hairnets and gloves, cooking breakfast for guests of the Niagara Falls-based nonprofit, which serves homeless individuals and families.

Old Fort Niagara invites the public to experience the holiday spirit in the company of 18th century-style merrymakers at this season's "Castle by Candlelight" tours on Dec. 9 and 16. Music, crafts, demonstrations and more will make the French Castle, decorated by the Youngstown Garden Club, brim with festivities. The event will also include the feu de joie celebratory cannon and musket firings.

About 18 months ago, when Russell H. Piper Jr. opened a room jam-packed with historical Lewiston paintings, prints, engravings, newspaper articles and furnishings inside the Red Brick Municipal Building, he said it was just the beginning. True enough, when guests visit during the upcoming Tour of Homes/Christmas Walk weekend, they will find more than 3,000 items in the second-floor repository.

On Monday night, The Eric Wood Fund, a not-for-profit organization founded by Buffalo Bills center Eric Wood, raised $57,500 to support programming of The Children's Hospital of Buffalo Foundation and Stone's Buddies. Proceeds were raised at the organization's annual Flights and Bites fundraiser and silent auction.

The Village of Lewiston's crown jewel has a new owner - one who has yet to be identified. Over the weekend, the Hastings family - Richard, his wife, Judy, and son, Alan - reached an agreement to sell the Frontier House and almost one acre of property for $800,000. The deal was represented by Dian Ruta, a licensed associate broker with Great Lakes Real Estate Inc.

Chris Jacobs marked Domestic Violence Awareness Month by announcing two state grants for service providers that provide assistance to victims and their families across Western New York. Old Fort Niagara will look to offer diverse and engaging programming in November, including French Heritage Day, a hearth cooking workshop, a free Scottish music performance, and a World War I history presentation. In addition, veterans and active military people will be admitted free on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
