Poloncarz today joined with local grocery stores Tops Markets and Wegmans to inform residents of continuing efforts to keep store shelves stocked and shopping environments safe for all. Grocery stores have been classified as essential businesses during the coronavirus pandemic and are working to ensure that all patrons have access to the supplies they need for the health and well-being of themselves and their families.

Niagara County Public Health Director Daniel J. Stapleton on Thursday afternoon released the following statement regarding the three positive COVID-19 test results the Niagara County Department of Health received from the New York State Health Department. These three individuals live in western Niagara County, which includes Niagara Falls and the towns of Niagara, Lewiston and Porter.

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the USNS Comfort will be deployed to New York harbor and is expected to arrive in April. The 1,000-bed hospital ship has 12 fully equipped operating rooms and will significantly increase New York's hospital surge capacity. The governor is meeting with leadership of the Army Corp of Engineers to discuss ways to increase hospital capacity in New York.

During a novel coronavirus briefing Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced New York state will contract with 28 private labs to increase testing capacity for the novel coronavirus. Following a call with the 28 labs, the governor announced he has instructed the labs to begin testing immediately as soon as they are ready. The 28 labs are specialized in virology and are routine partners with the New York State Department of Health.

Niagara County supports Lock Tenders tribute monument

The Niagara County Legislature presented a check for $75,000 at its meeting Tuesday night to the Lockport Locks Heritage District in support of the Lock Tenders tribute monument. For the past three years, I've organized the "Light it up for Lymphedema" campaign for the New York State Chapter of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN). The campaign encourages sites around the state and Canada to glow in teal each March 6, World Lymphedema Day, to raise awareness of lymphedema (LE) and lymphatic diseases (LD), chronic swelling conditions that have no cures. If left untreated, LE and LD can lead to deformities, infections and death.
