On Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems, including those who have had a heart, stem cell or other organ transplant and are on immunosuppressive treatment, or who have weakened immune systems due to disease or other medical treatment including active cancer therapy.

The independent investigators appointed by New York Attorney General Letitia James - led by Joon H. Kim and Anne L. Clark - on Tuesday released their report into the multiple allegations of sexual harassment by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. After nearly five months, the investigators concluded that Gov. Cuomo did sexually harass multiple women - including former and current state employees - by engaging in unwanted groping, kissing and hugging, and making inappropriate comments.

Niagara County to hold household hazardous waste collection in Lewiston

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh and Legislator Irene Myers are co-sponsoring a household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, Aug. 21, in conjunction with the Town of Lewiston, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, Assemblyman Angelo Morinello and the Niagara County Department of Public Works. The event is open to all Niagara County residents. An appointment is required.

With 496 new COVID-19 cases in past 7 days, Erie County experiencing 'substantial' transmission

The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed 99 new COVID-19 cases for July 29, resulting in 496 new COVID-19 cases within the past seven days. Based on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicators for community transmission, Erie County is now considered to have "substantial" COVID-19 transmission, with a case rate of 54 new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days.
Cuomo announces launch of $35 million Restaurant Return-to-Work Tax Credit program

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced the launch of New York state's $35 million Restaurant Return-to-Work Tax Credit program, designed to help expand employment opportunities for workers and provide relief to COVID-19-impacted restaurants. Created as part of the fiscal year 2022 budget, the program offers a tax credit for the rapid hiring of restaurant workers to reduce the restaurant industry's pandemic-induced economic difficulties. Qualifying restaurants could receive a $5,000 tax credit per net new hire, totaling up to $50,000 in tax credits per business.

On Tuesday, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated information for fully vaccinated people given new evidence on the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant of the coronavirus currently circulating in the U.S. It added a recommendation for fully vaccinated people to wear a mask in public indoor settings in areas of substantial or high transmission. Currently, Erie and Niagara counties are labeled moderate risk.

On Tuesday, Niagara University broke ground on its $11.5 million renovation project at the university's Kiernan Recreation Center. Project construction is scheduled to begin later this month, and the renovation is expected to be completed for the fall 2022 semester. Cuomo signs legislation permitting use of municipal space for outdoor dining

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday signed legislation (S.6353-A/A.7733) that will allow restaurants to utilize municipal spaces like sidewalks and streets for outdoor dining. First granted under an executive order, this law allows restaurants to continue using these public spaces for another year as they recover from the economic devastation brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
