Auer, Kirk winners of 56th Hewitt Scholar/Athlete Awards

Sophia Auer of Lewiston-Porter and Alec Kirk of Starpoint were named winners of the 56th Thomas E. Hewitt Scholar/Athlete Awards. Each received a $2,500 scholarship. The awards were presented by the board of associates of Mount St. Mary's Hospital in a ceremony held at the Niagara Frontier Golf Club. The program was sponsored by the Mount St Mary's Hospital Foundation.

Niagara County Community College students Alexander Minnehan, Meredith Preve and Regan Lytle recently earned awards for their unique contributions in the areas of academics, civic leadership and athletics. Gregory Robinson, the former director of the James Webb Space Telescope Program at NASA, and Niagara University alumnus Sam Goodwin, who spent nine weeks imprisoned in Syria, will address graduates at Niagara University's 2023 commencement ceremonies on May 11 and 13 at the outdoor amphitheater at Artpark in Lewiston. On May 18, Altaf Stationwala, president/CEO at Mackenzie Health, will provide the commencement address for NU's Ontario graduates, who will celebrate at a ceremony at the Meridian Centre.

Canisius College awarded university status

Canisius College has successfully petitioned the New York State Education Department Board of Regents for university designation. The transition will take place during summer 2023 alongside the rollout of the first strategic plan for the university. In August, ahead of the start of the fall semester, Canisius will unveil a refreshed branding initiative to introduce the school's new identity.

After three years, due to COVID-19 and renovations to its recreation center, Niagara University once again hosted the Special Olympics New York's Western Regional Basketball Tournament on its campus. The tournament took place Saturday, April 22, in the university's Kiernan Recreation Center.
