The Niagara Falls High School basketball program has a rich history of winning and is always held to high expectations. In the 2017-18 season, they won the Niagara Frontier League and their 20th Section VI title dating back to the old Niagara Falls High School on Pine Avenue, but this year seniors Quran Dubois, Syquan Ralands, Tazaun Rose and Marquise Miller want more than just another sectional title: they want the states.
Niagara-Wheatfield HS holds basketball game for Bald for Bucks

Tuesday night a couple thousand people gathered at the Niagara-Wheatfield gym for a basketball game between the Niagara-Wheatfield faculty and the Buffalo Sabres Alumni. The evening was more than a fun pickup game, though, as proceeds from the game benefitted the Bald for Bucks association in honor of the late James Campbell, who passed away in August due to cancer.

2 North Tonawanda students named top youth volunteers

North Tonawanda sisters, Bailey and Shelby Walter, were recently recognized by the New York State Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The awards are a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. The awards are in their 23rd year and conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Honorees were judged on criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact and personal growth.

Of all times for the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons offense to get cold, the last place coach Gary Jackson wanted it to be was in the Section VI playoffs. Unfortunately, for the Falcons, points were hard to come by and they were defeated by the Jamestown Red Raiders, 48-39.

It's been the story all year for the Niagara-Wheatfield basketball team. The team competes and keeps the game close, but the opposition goes on a second half run to pull away. The story lived on Wednesday night and ended Niagara-Wheatfield's season, as the Frontier Falcons used a big 39-15 second half to pull away N-W.

Wednesday night, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks faced the Grand Island Vikings in the Niagara Frontier League's third place crossover game. The Lumberjacks got off to a hot start, but the Vikings continued to push their way back, falling just short. North Tonawanda defeated Grand Island, 59-53, in front of a loud Vikings crowd.

Grand Island coach Ron Krysztof will tell anyone his team's ability to shoot the 3-pointer is critical. Wednesday night versus Niagara-Wheatfield, they only made six, a little below their season average, but all six came at key times to spark a Vikings win. The Vikings defeated the Falcons 51-30 Wednesday night for their second win in a row.

For the third year in a row, the Battle of the Border brought talent from north of the border in Ontario to Niagara Falls High School to face off against some of the best that Western New York has to offer. Although only three Canadian teams played in this year's classic, the players from Canada represented their side of the border well, winning two of the three games. There were also some familiar faces from last year's battle who returned to the Wolvarena for another bought with an American high school. Here is a full recap from the action on Saturday.

Both teams provided non-stop, on the edge of your seat action that was thrilling until the final horn sounded. Like every basketball game, their must be a winner and the Wolverines were the victors, 58-55 in overtime.

Niagara-Wheatfield and St. Joes played the most hyped up hockey game scheduled for Wednesday night, as the No. 6 ranked team in the state faced the No. 9 ranked team in the state, respectively. After 50 minutes of play, though, there was no winner and no loser. The Falcons and Marauders tied, 1-1, Wednesday night at the Hockey Outlet. N-W and St. Joes came in as the second and third place teams in Division, respectively.

Michael Duffett Memorial Award, presented each year to the coach or administrator whose contributions to amateur hockey in Western New York "best exemplify the knowledge, teaching, love of the game and gentle humanity of Mike."

It's rare for an eighth-grader to play on a varsity team, let alone start. The Niagara Falls Wolverines are in rare company, as they start two eighth-graders. Saturday afternoon at Aquinas, eighth-grader Willie Lightfoot was a key in sealing the Wolverines victory. The Falls defeated the Lil' Irish in their third road game in as many days, 68-55.
Lewiston dancers collect for Heart, Love & Soul

Students and teachers from the Lewiston Dance Center recently took part in a food drive for the Heart, Love & Soul Community Kitchen. Studio owners Rachel Novelli and Kathy Abbondanza decided to try boosting donations by getting the dance instructors involved. The result was a dance contest between the instructors. The class with the most donations would win a $50 gift card.

For about two weeks now, Niagara Frontier League teams and fans had Jan. 20 circled on the calendar for one reason; Niagara Falls versus Lockport. The game was hyped up by players and students all over social media, as two of the top teams in the NFL battled on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines were the victors, defeating Lockport, 72-58.

On Friday night, the Charter School of Applied Technologies did not shoot the ball well, but the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons were not able to corral in defensive rebounds, giving the Eagles plenty of second chances. It stung in the end, as the Falcons were defeated by CSAT, 56-48.

The one-day showcase on Saturday, Feb. 3, will feature four American high school basketball teams taking on four Canadian high school basketball teams. Niagara-Wheatfield golf to represent NFL in first Section VI team championship

On Thursday, Section VI boys golf Chairman Nate Leary announced that the section would hold its first annual Section VI boys golf team championship. The team aspect will be held alongside the annual individual championship and state qualifier. So, the tournament will not only crown an individual Section VI Champion and eight state tournament qualifiers, but also a Section VI team champion, something that hasn't been awarded in "many decades."
