Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced that, in lieu of an in-person community conversation, his office created a virtual speaker series that was distributed Monday to Buffalo Public School students. The video, "Buffalo Strong: Inspirational Moments for Our Youth," features more than a dozen government leaders, community activists and artists from the Buffalo area offering words of encouragement to students who finished the school year at home due to the pandemic.

The State University of New York at Fredonia announced construction is starting on its first solar/battery project, enabling the Chautauqua County campus in Western New York to lead by example in reducing its carbon footprint with innovative energy efficiency and renewable energy technology. The New York Power Authority, as the campus' energy adviser, is overseeing the project. Selected in a competitive bidding process, the state's strategic partners Oriden, a Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems venture, and Solar Liberty are providing a turnkey installation for the solar-plus-storage solution, from concept to design, installation and financing.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced $1.6 million in additional federal funding for the Buffalo and Erie County Workforce Investment Board (WIB). The funding, which is allocated through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, will be directed to the WIB's Health Profession Opportunity Grant (HPOG) program. The program previously received two five-year awards; this extends WIB's successful HPOG program for an 11th year.

The Erie Community College Board of Trustees announced the immediate search for Erie Community College's 12th president, which is expected to result in a candidate selection by the end of 2020. Congressman Brian Higgins announced two Western New York organizations were selected for September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance Grant awards totaling more than $103,000 from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The purpose of the grants is to encourage volunteering as a tribute to victims, survivors, and those who served in response to the attacks on 9/11.

William Mattar law offices have kicked off the "William Mattar 4 Graduates" contest, where 2020 high school graduates can enter to win free college textbooks for the upcoming fall semester. Car accident attorney Mattar launched this contest to support students in the community as they begin their college education. While this was the 79th consecutive year that members of NU's Purple Eagle Battalion have taken the oath of office, it was the first time the ceremony contained both virtual and face-to-face elements.

Attorney General Letitia James announced her office will make its "Election Protection" hotline available for the June 23 election and during New York's early voting period, which lasts from June 13-21. The hotline will be available to troubleshoot and resolve a range of issues encountered by voters, including voting by absentee ballot due to the COVID-19 crisis or in-person at their polling place.

Allocated by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the grant will give D'Youville $707,983 to help address a shortage of faculty available to educate future nurses.

The Niagara County Community College Foundation office has continued to work tirelessly to raise funds for our students who are struggling with financial hardships caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. As of June 5, the NCCC Foundation has raised $15,000 to support 150 current students. Each student has received a $100 gift card to help purchase groceries, medicine and other basic necessities.

As part of her capstone course, projects in public health, Niagara University senior Joy O'Brien decided to install Little Free Libraries throughout the City of Niagara Falls to increase and promote children's literacy. Working with her course professor, Dr. Mark Gallo, and their community partner, Brian Archie from Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative, O'Brien was well on her way to construct six libraries, which serve as neighborhood book exchanges and operate on a "take a book, leave a book" basis.

In New York state, 222 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the "100 Deadliest Days" from 2008 to 2018. The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. The number of people killed in crashes involving teen drivers, in New York, during rest of the year is 382 (for a total of 604 from 2008 to 2018). 222 people killed in summer months compared to 382 killed during non-summer months, over the 10 years, is an increase of more than 70%. Moreover, 222 people killed in the summertime equates to a yearly average of 20.2 deaths.

On May 20, the Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held its last budget discussions before this week's upcoming public budget hearing and board elections. Amid funding shortfalls from the state, the board is set to propose a $77,119,627 budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year, a 3.66% increase from last year. Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich and Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Management Allison Davis outlined strategies the district will use to cover the budget, including a 1.49% increase on the tax levy.
