The University at Buffalo School of Nursing has received a $1.5 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to increase access to mental health and substance abuse treatment by integrating care in nurse-led primary care clinics in rural and medically underserved areas in Western New York.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced two Western New York organizations were selected for September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance Grant awards totaling more than $103,000 from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The purpose of the grants is to encourage volunteering as a tribute to victims, survivors, and those who served in response to the attacks on 9/11.

William Mattar law offices have kicked off the "William Mattar 4 Graduates" contest, where 2020 high school graduates can enter to win free college textbooks for the upcoming fall semester. Car accident attorney Mattar launched this contest to support students in the community as they begin their college education. Three winners will be randomly selected to each receive $500 toward their textbook purchase for college and university courses.

Seven Niagara University Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets were commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Army during ceremonies held May 23 on the Niagara University campus. While this was the 79th consecutive year that members of NU's Purple Eagle Battalion have taken the oath of office, it was the first time the ceremony contained both virtual and face-to-face elements.

Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) on Monday launched its new reimagined Girl Scout summer camp with "The Summer We Camped At Home" virtual summer camp experience. This new form of summer camp allows girls and their families a variety of ways to stay connected and get outdoors given the limited camp and outdoor options due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attorney General Letitia James announced her office will make its "Election Protection" hotline available for the June 23 election and during New York's early voting period, which lasts from June 13-21. The hotline will be available to troubleshoot and resolve a range of issues encountered by voters, including voting by absentee ballot due to the COVID-19 crisis or in-person at their polling place.

As Western New York continues to battle the novel coronavirus, Congressman Brian Higgins joined D'Youville College in announcing a federal grant for the college's nursing program. Allocated by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the grant will give D'Youville $707,983 to help address a shortage of faculty available to educate future nurses.

The Niagara County Community College Foundation office has continued to work tirelessly to raise funds for our students who are struggling with financial hardships caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. As of June 5, the NCCC Foundation has raised $15,000 to support 150 current students. Each student has received a $100 gift card to help purchase groceries, medicine and other basic necessities.

As part of her capstone course, projects in public health, Niagara University senior Joy O'Brien decided to install Little Free Libraries throughout the City of Niagara Falls to increase and promote children's literacy. Working with her course professor, Dr. Mark Gallo, and their community partner, Brian Archie from Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative, O'Brien was well on her way to construct six libraries, which serve as neighborhood book exchanges and operate on a "take a book, leave a book" basis.

In New York state, 222 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the "100 Deadliest Days" from 2008 to 2018. The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. The number of people killed in crashes involving teen drivers, in New York, during rest of the year is 382 (for a total of 604 from 2008 to 2018). 222 people killed in summer months compared to 382 killed during non-summer months, over the 10 years, is an increase of more than 70%. Moreover, 222 people killed in the summertime equates to a yearly average of 20.2 deaths.

On May 20, the Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held its last budget discussions before this week's upcoming public budget hearing and board elections. Amid funding shortfalls from the state, the board is set to propose a $77,119,627 budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year, a 3.66% increase from last year. Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich and Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Management Allison Davis outlined strategies the district will use to cover the budget, including a 1.49% increase on the tax levy.

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance announced additional food assistance of more than $880 million to help New Yorkers with children who previously received free and reduced-price meals at school. The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program will provide eligible households with a total of about $420 per child, with school buildings closed for the remainder of the school year due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Stephanie Cole Adams, former university general counsel and founder of the Law Office of Stephanie Adams, was honorary inductee. The ceremony was held via Zoom due to social distancing requirements.

What started as a group of eight students who shared a passion for video games has quickly become an officially recognized student organization and club sport at Niagara University with more than 40 members. In their inaugural year, NU's esports teams have competed on a weekly basis against other esports programs across the country as a member of the Division 1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF).

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the members of New York's "Reimagine Education" advisory council - made up of educators, students, parents and education leaders - to help districts reimagine schools as they prepare to reopen while protecting health and safety, how virtual learning can bridge the gap, and supplement face to face education when schools reopen. The council - chaired by SUNY Empire State College President Jim Malatras - will be comprised of lower and higher education leaders from across the state.
