The July 4th Independence Day holiday has traditionally been the day Town of Grand Island residents celebrate the community like few others in this country. It is a holiday they truly enjoy by inviting family and friends for activities from early morning to late evening when a spectacular fireworks show would light up the sky over the Island and even cause travelers along Interstate 190 to pull over in awe of the colorful displays.

Bill Baldwin, a park entertainer for nearly 30 years who played Black Bart - among many roles - in the popular Western shows, proudly said he was shot and fell to the ground in Western Town 28,678 times during his Fantasy Island career. Upon hearing the park was closing, he contacted his friend, Jay Wilcox, a maintenance supervisor at the park for 20 years and now chief operating officer of Empire Adventures Inc. They began brainstorming about what it would take to bring the park back under local ownership and led by a team of former employees.

Artpark & Company is looking for volunteers to check-in, participate and assist guests attending "The Art of Walking" treks at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays. Volunteers will receive a free ticket for a family or friend to accompany them on the walk on the day they volunteer. Walks are one hour long.

Congressman Brian Higgins on Tuesday announced two federal grants totaling $2,061,984 to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority for snow removal equipment at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. The Fourth of July may feel a little different this year due to COVID-19. Smaller barbecues, less parties and limited celebrations filled with displayed fireworks. Although sparklers and similar items can be bought and sold in much of New York, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York urges residents to let professionals handle the fireworks.

Old Fort Niagara will reopen to visitors this Friday, July 3, following its 15-week closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Daily hours of operation have been shortened slightly, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to allow for extra cleaning before and after hours. Hourly musket and living-history demonstrations and seasonal food service will resume following proper health and social-distancing guidelines.

Arts Services Initiative of Western New York Inc. announced applications for its David R. Fendrick Theatre Fund are now open. The biannual program awards one $1,000 grant to an individual theater artist in Western New York, and supports the writing or production of new work, the new production of existing work, experimental and multimedia theatrical productions, and/or the completion of a work in progress. Applications are open until 11:59 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and selection will be announced in September.

Junior Achievement of Western New York (JA) announced via a series of video recordings on Facebook that it raised $126,118 through the 36th annual JA Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser. A total of 1,132 individuals, representing 50 local companies, raised funds for JA's financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and career and work readiness programs, taught by volunteers in WNY schools. Bank of America has been the title sponsor of the JA Bowl-A-Thon for the past 35 years.

Governors in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut announced a travel advisory on June 25 that requires all individuals traveling from states with significant community transmission of COVID-19 to remain under quarantine for a period of 14 days. As of June 30, those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced eight additional states meet the metrics to qualify for the travel advisory requiring individuals who have traveled to New York from those states - all of which have significant community spread - to quarantine for 14 days. The newly added states are California, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Tennessee. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a seven-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average.
