SBA, Treasury Department announce $10 billion for CDFIs to participate in Paycheck Protection Program

The U.S. Small Business Administration, in consultation with the U.S. Treasury Department, announced it is setting aside $10 billion of round two funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to be lent exclusively by Community Development Financial Institutions. CDFIs work to expand economic opportunity in low-income communities by providing access to financial products and services for local residents and businesses.
NYSEG, RG&E preparing for thunderstorms & winds across state

NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of AVANGRID Inc., are preparing for high winds and rain associated with incoming storms expected to hit their service areas Friday afternoon and into the evening. As a result of the storm, customers may experience service disruptions. The storm is expected to impact most of the NYSEG and RG&E footprint, which includes the Western New York, Rochester, Southern Tier, Capital Region and Hudson Valley.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the statewide fishing season for muskellunge opens Saturday, May 30, in most locations. The muskellunge season for New York's Lake Erie, Upper Niagara River, Lower Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River opens on the third Saturday in June - June 20 this year.

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America's (AFA) will host a free virtual educational conference as part of its national Educating America Tour to help New Yorkers affected by Alzheimer's disease during the COVID-19 crisis. This event is slated for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 16. The conference will provide information and advice from health, legal and caregiving experts, as well as special guest speaker Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of "The Dr. Oz Show." It is free and open to all. AAA: 20.2 people die in NYS crashes involving teen drivers every summer during '100 Deadliest Days'

In New York state, 222 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the "100 Deadliest Days" from 2008 to 2018. The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. The number of people killed in crashes involving teen drivers, in New York, during rest of the year is 382 (for a total of 604 from 2008 to 2018). 222 people killed in summer months compared to 382 killed during non-summer months, over the 10 years, is an increase of more than 70%. Moreover, 222 people killed in the summertime equates to a yearly average of 20.2 deaths.

Higgins announces federal affordable housing assistance for people with disabilities

Congressman Brian Higgins announced $34,561 to Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority (BMHA) and $65,073 to the City of Buffalo in federal funding to assist in providing affordable housing to non-elderly people living with disabilities through the Mainstream Housing Choice Voucher Program. This brings total affordable housing federal emergency relief supporting Buffalo residents to over $16 million: $3,044,512 for the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority and $13,120,017 for the City of Buffalo.

On May 20, the Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held its last budget discussions before this week's upcoming public budget hearing and board elections. Amid funding shortfalls from the state, the board is set to propose a $77,119,627 budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year, a 3.66% increase from last year. Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich and Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Management Allison Davis outlined strategies the district will use to cover the budget, including a 1.49% increase on the tax levy.

NHL plans 'Return to Play'

The National Hockey League on Tuesday announced a "Return to Play" plan, which will see 24 teams compete in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Participating squads will begin in "hub cities." The top four teams in each conference will have a round-robin tournament, while the remaining field of 16 enters a best-of-five-games elimination tournament.
