New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the fourth round of grant funding from the Environmental Protection Fund is being made available to help municipalities across the state address costs associated with the collection and recycling of eligible electronic wastes (e-waste). DEC will accept applications for these grants in January 2019.

U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday that Michael Yount, 47, of Lancaster, who was convicted of making a materially false statement, was sentenced to serve two years probation by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford. Wolford also ordered the defendant to perform 100 hours of community service "that directly contributes to the betterment of this community's environment."

Residents of the towns of Niagara and Lewiston were able to breathe a little easier after Tuesday night's Town of Niagara Town Board meeting. In front of a jam-packed audience at Town of Niagara Town Hall, the board issued a positive declaration for the preliminary plat for the Bri Estates subdivision.

On Wednesday, the Buffalo City Mission announced the beginning of construction of the new, $15 million community center at 100 E. Tupper St. The 75,000-square-foot flagship facility will help prevent men, women and children from becoming homeless and provide more complete care to individuals who already experience homelessness.

During the continued construction of the Niagara Falls State Park Prospect Point welcome plaza project, contractors for the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation discovered a limited area of additional slag to be cleaned up on park property. State Parks said the materials have already been contained and pose no threat to public health and safety, as they are in the same fenced-off project area, inaccessible to the public, as last month's discovery.

On Tuesday, First Niagara Foundation and KeyBank executives announced their continued support of Say Yes Buffalo with a $2 million gift to the organization's five-year, $100 million endowment campaign, which will ensure scholarship availability for eligible students forever. Including this donation, the First Niagara Foundation and KeyBank collectively have committed more than $4.1 million to the Say Yes Buffalo scholarship fund.

Loosely translated, "Viva La Barbacoa" means "long live barbecue" - and that's the theme for the annual KSBC-sanctioned OINKtoberfest, being held this weekend as part of the Great Pumpkin Farm's Fall Festival. OINKtoberfest is New York state's official and longest-running barbecue cook-off event. Teams from all over the East Coast and Canada are scheduled to compete.

Niagara County Community College distinguished alumna and nationally acclaimed artist Susan Geissler, Class of 1974, recently donated a sculpture to the NCCC Child Development Center. The sculpture, "Puddle Jumper," is based on childhood memories of rainy-day playtimes. It will be permanently displayed in the center's foyer inside the new NCCC Learning Commons on the Sanborn campus.

On Thursday afternoon, coworkers and local elected leaders joined Ellicott Development CEO William Paladino as he broke ground on property overlooking a new plaza project. His company, in 2012, purchased a 4.1-acre parcel of land at Center, North Eighth and Onondaga streets. Three buildings offering a mix of commercial and culinary tenants, as well as rental spaces, are expected to open in the next year.

A new mural titled "Peaces" can now be seen in the International Peace Garden at 476 Center St., Lewiston. This work of art is the latest creation by artist Thomas P. Asklar. He was assisted by artists Matthew Conroy, Zach Carlson, Matthew LeBoeuf and a few local high school art students.
