Community Missions' duck race returns for annual swim

One of the duckiest fundraising events of the summer is on deck this week, as Community Missions will hold its annual duck race at the Canal Fest of the Tonawandas at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20. The event has been a fun part of the weeklong festivities for more than 10 years, and raises funds for the organization's crisis and community services.

In a ceremony at Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249, New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs recognized lifelong Grand Island resident Daniel McMahon as a 2019 New York State Veterans' Hall of Fame inductee. McMahon, who was also honored in a statewide ceremony in Albany in May, was presented with a framed proclamation marking the honor before his fellow veterans and post members.

Empire State Development on Wednesday announced "A Quiet Place Part II," the sequel to the original hit thriller directed by John Krasinski, has started production in Western New York. Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced an agreement on a new six-year contract has been reached between Erie County and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA). The new pact, approved by NYSNA membership on July 3, includes raises of 2% in 2020-23, along with a raise of 3% in 2019.
