Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, announced the House of Representatives has approved the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2019 (HR 2507). The bipartisan bill, cosponsored by Higgins, assists states in improving and expanding newborn screening programs, supports parent and provider newborn screening education, and ensures laboratory quality and surveillance.

The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the Porter Town Hall, located at 3265 Creek Road, Youngstown. The informal, open house meeting will cover a proposed project to replace three bridges located on NY Route 93, Youngstown-Lockport Road, and NY Route 425, Cambria-Wilson Road, over Twelvemile Creek and branches of Twelvemile Creek, in the towns of Porter and Wilson.

Congressman Chris Collins announced the U.S. Department of Transportation's Low or No Emission Program has allocated $2,500,000 to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. This grant provides funding to state and local governmental authorities for the purchase or lease of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses.

The 20th annual Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise and Clambake, a popular fundraising event held for Niagara Hospice, was held Friday, July 12, at the Porter on the Lake. The high water levels of Lake Ontario required many last-minute changes to be made, but organizers said the event was still an exceptional celebration.

Members of the Kupiec family, along with Unyts and the Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co., are hosting a community blood drive honoring the memory of North Tonawanda native Brandon Kupiec from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1. Kupiec died unexpectedly in 2013 at the age of 20. His family holds this yearly event in his honor. Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co. will host the event at the firehall, 3747 Lockport Road.

Drum Corps International (DCI) will present 2019 DCI Drums Along the Waterfront beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at New Era Stadium in Orchard Park. The show is part of the 2019 summer tour that includes more than 100 shows in 37 states with 45 drum corps on the road to World Championship Finals in Indianapolis on Aug. 10.

The Oak Ridge Boys will perform over 30 concerts. General Motors Co. on Tuesday confirmed its Tonawanda engine plant will build the company's next-generation 6.2L small-block V-8 engine that will power the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Production of the Corvette Stingray begins at GM's Bowling Green, Kentucky, assembly plant in late 2019.

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday announced she co-led a coalition of 50 attorneys general in reaching the largest data breach settlement in history with Equifax Inc., as a result of an investigation into the company's massive 2017 data breach that exposed the personal information of nearly half the U.S. population. The attorneys general secured a settlement with Equifax that includes a consumer restitution fund of up to $425 million, a $175 million payment to the states, and significant injunctive relief for consumers.

In the U.S., vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks are occurring in schools, churches, religious groups and other group settings with low immunization rates. New York state has experienced increased numbers of measles outbreaks in areas with low immunization rates of children. This was due to religious exemptions that resulted in unvaccinated children attending schools where disease was spread to other unvaccinated children, some of whom cannot receive vaccines due to medical conditions.
