Higgins announces committee approval of Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, announced the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) Act of 2019 (HR4031), legislation increasing GLRI funding over the next five years, from $375 million in 2022 to $475 million by 2026.
Niagara County receives federal grant to support emergency services

At Thursday's legislative meeting, the Niagara County Legislature accepted a $2.1 million grant that was approved by the Department of Homeland Security to support the county's effort to enhance radio communication within the fire service.

Lewiston-Porter announced the opening of the Gary Raby Sr. Cross Country Course this week on the Creek Road campus. The course was dedicated at a Tuesday afternoon ceremony, with the Raby family present to cut the ribbon and open the 1.7-mile course. The Lew-Port cross country team, now coached by Gary's daughter, Jenn, was joined by alumni, administrators and board members to honor Gary and his vision, and then explore the course.

During that time, the board resolved to grant Randal Sinatra a mixed-families residence zoning for his property on Laur Road, create a local law that paves the way for a possible recycling plant within the town, schedule a public hearing for the destruction of a zombie home and, of course, answer questions from citizens.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487's "Circle of Honor" started to be assembled on Wednesday morning. Patrol cars from the Lewiston Police Department and Niagara County Sheriff's Office escorted stone pillars down Center Street and into Academy Park. Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, announced a federal grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program has been awarded to the City of Buffalo for the hiring of firefighters. The grant is for a total of $9,806,400 and administered by DHS's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will open its 2019-20 season with a toast to BPO musicians and JoAnn Falletta, who takes the podium for her 20th year as music director. All ticket-holding patrons are invited to the champagne toast, which will take place in the Mary Seaton Room of Kleinhans Music Hall just prior to the 8 p.m. main stage concert, titled "Favorites & Friends: A Celebration of 20 Years." Pre-concert music will be provided in the Mary Seaton Room by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, under the direction of Adam Luebke.
