Representatives from Price Rite Marketplace and the University at Buffalo football team donated 43 "sacks" of food to New Beginnings Food Pantry on Tuesday at Price Rite Marketplace of Amherst. The donation was a result of the football team's 43 sacks this season and included canned goods, fresh produce, rice, pasta and water.

New York Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the acceptance of a section of the former Tonawanda Coke Corporation property into the state's brownfield cleanup program, and the execution of a new consent order with Honeywell International to hold the company responsible for the cleanup of other sections of the former plant site under the state's superfund program. Together, the agreements with Riverview Innovation & Technology Campus Inc. (Riverview) and Honeywell provide a successful path forward in the comprehensive removal of contamination at the site and will facilitate the area's redevelopment to benefit the community.

A quick Google search will show the word "empower" means to give someone the authority or power to do something; or make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights. Similar words of both definition, from that same search include: authorize, emancipate, unshackle and permit. Bearing this in mind might explain why United Cerebral Palsy Association of Niagara County Inc. took it on as its nomenclature and became Empower in 2015.

This past Monday, the manager of the Wheatfield Gardens greenhouses, Paal Eflstrum, came in front of the Town Board of Wheatfield to update the board members on some of the changes he had made on the border - as documented in a letter to the town - with the Timberlakes subdivision, and asked the board for further instructions on how to be "good neighbors."

Attorney General Letitia James recently announced more than $2.7 million in grants for the cities of Buffalo, Rochester, and Niagara Falls as part of Cities for Responsible Investment and Strategic Enforcement ("Cities RISE"). The program provides municipalities the funding to launch innovative programs related to housing and strategic code enforcement. Cities RISE aims to innovatively address and transform blighted, vacant or poorly maintained problem properties through the use of housing and community data from various state agencies.

Those with income of $69,000 or less in 2019 may be eligible to file their federal and state taxes at one of the Tax Department's free tax assistance sites.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski and Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Rebecca Wydysh today said Niagara County residents should strongly consider getting passports rather than rely on New York state driver's licenses to meet the TSA requirements for REAL ID for all domestic flights that takes effect on Oct. 1. The new rules require every traveler 18 years of age an older to have at minimum a REAL-ID-compliant driver's license to fly within the U.S.

The University at Buffalo has been awarded a five-year, $21.7 million clinical and translational science award (CTSA) from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health in recognition of the dramatic progress UB and its partners have made since 2015 when UB first received the CTSA. NIH announced the funding today.

The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) has awarded a $45,000 grant to the Erie County Anti-Stigma Coalition to expand its awareness campaign, "Join the Conversation," into Niagara County. The coalition's campaign promotes mental health awareness and fights the stigma surrounding mental illness, which can be a barrier preventing people from seeking the help and treatment they need.

Drew Bernstein is a missionary at St. Luke's Mission of Mercy on Buffalo's East Side. He is also the coordinator of its Code Blue initiative when up to 50 cots and bedding are rolled out for homeless men to escape the winter cold at night when the temperatures are below freezing. It is a place where these men can obtain a hot meal and breakfast in the morning, dry their clothing and hopefully, a good night's sleep in a safe environment.
