As COVID-19 continues to devastate the hotel industry, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) released new data showing 70% of hotel employees have been laid off or furloughed as eight in 10 hotel rooms across the nation remain empty.

As we enter the final weekend and the last week of April, many so called "snow birds" will be returning home to Western and Central New York from winter getaways down south. Snow birds is the common term for local residents who spend their winters down south and their summers up north. With limited travel amid the COVID-19 pandemic, AAA Western and Central New York is seeing an influx in calls from snow birds who are looking for the safest routes to return home. As a safety advocate, AAA wants to ensure that all travelers have a positive experience on their return with health and safety measures in place.

Recently, the Erie County Department of Senior Services, in conjunction with the Erie County Office for People with Disabilities, announced a partnership with Hearts and Hands: Faith in Action, the IDEA Center at the University at Buffalo, Wegmans and others to assist with transportation, deliveries and social connection needs for seniors and the disabled.

Beginning today, WellNow Urgent Care is offering two types of COVID-19 testing at its Western New York facilities: molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and blood antibody serology testing. Individuals who have or recently had COVID-19 symptoms are eligible to receive the tests. Tests are available seven days a week with no appointment needed.

Niagara University's Border Community SERVICE program is leading an effort distribute face masks to seniors in the Niagara Region. The organization is focused on enhancing regional emergency preparedness. It solicited the participation of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) members, and partnered with the volunteer group Operation Sewing Squad - Flattening the WNY Curve to make the masks, which it has distributed to local organizations that help the senior and other vulnerable populations in the county.

A week ago, The Billoni family and Colvin Cleaners announced they were bringing back their tailors and seamstresses who were laid off due to COVID-19 to make reusable, washable face masks for their customers and local nonprofit agencies. Within an hour of this announcement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced everyone in New York is required to wear a facemask when out in public.

The Niagara County Community College Student Showcase has become an annual tradition, featuring students working with the help of faculty mentors to create projects highlighting every division on campus. In its third year, the showcase was not able to be held on campus due to COVID-19, but that did not stop organizers from pushing forward in a virtual format.

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees unanimously approved the fiscal year 2020-21 budget on Monday. Residents will see an 8-cent increase in their property taxes, with a fee of $7.65 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. That equates to $12 more for a homeowner with a $150,000 property.

M&T Bank and KeyBank, in partnership with the First Niagara Foundation, have teamed up with Pegula Sports & Entertainment in its direct community aid initiative. By calling 716-218-1419 between the hours of 8:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m., one can reach a Catholic Charities staff member about mental health and substance abuse counseling, make arrangements to obtain food from one of the organization's nine food pantries, or seek assistance with housing, utilities or other related basic living needs.
