Higgins announces federal affordable housing assistance for people with disabilities

Congressman Brian Higgins announced $34,561 to Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority (BMHA) and $65,073 to the City of Buffalo in federal funding to assist in providing affordable housing to non-elderly people living with disabilities through the Mainstream Housing Choice Voucher Program. This brings total affordable housing federal emergency relief supporting Buffalo residents to over $16 million: $3,044,512 for the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority and $13,120,017 for the City of Buffalo.

Niagara-Wheatfield BOE gets set for budget vote; outlines graduation plans

On May 20, the Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held its last budget discussions before this week's upcoming public budget hearing and board elections. Amid funding shortfalls from the state, the board is set to propose a $77,119,627 budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year, a 3.66% increase from last year. Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich and Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Management Allison Davis outlined strategies the district will use to cover the budget, including a 1.49% increase on the tax levy.

Over 20 families participated in the VFW Post 313 Youngstown Memorial Day car drive-by remembrance Monday at Universal, Saint Bernard's, Oakland Rural and Old Fort Niagara cemeteries. At each site, veterans got out of their vehicles and offered a salute to their fallen comrades and a wreath was placed at the War of 1812 monument at Old Fort Niagara.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in coordination with federal, state and local health officials, will begin to drop off 2020 census questionnaire packets at front doors of households in most upstate New York counties starting Wednesday, May 27. This is done in areas where the majority of households do not receive mail at their physical address. The Census Bureau began hand-delivering census materials on March 15, but suspended all fieldwork for this operation on March 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

American Medical Response (AMR) of Western New York announced 2019 was a record-best year for cardiac arrest survival statistics, according to the national cardiac arrest registry to enhance survival (CARES) program. Last year, AMR had its highest number of survivors from cardiac arrest, highest rate of survivors with favorable neurologic outcome, and, for the first time, reported survival rates above the national average of agencies to report to the CARES program.
