The Western New York Land Conservancy has purchased a 44-acre forest on Love Road on Grand Island from the Buffalo Ornithological Society. The purchase was funded by the Greenway Ecological Standing Committee and was supported by the Niagara River Greenway Commission.

The Erie County Department of Social Services' Adult Protective Services division announced it will be receiving a grant for $275,732, the largest amount granted to any county in New York outside of New York City, to enhance, improve and expand the ability of APS to investigate allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation in the context of COVID-19.

The 181st Erie County Fair will honor veterans and active military during its daily flag retreat ceremony at Slade Park. Now in its third year, this patriotic tradition will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, and continue each evening during the fair's 12-day run.

It was an emotionally charged, patriotic, somber and extremely well-orchestrated military tribute to veterans. The unveiling of a life-sized statue of Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper in his hometown occurred in front of a large crowd with great fanfare on Saturday, June 5.

In April 2020, the Albright-Knox's Public Art Initiative asked 16 local artists to respond to the initial lockdown requirements of the pandemic. To build community spirit, the museum sent artmaking materials to these artists at their home studios, and they worked to produce a 16-piece collaborative mural. The piece, now located at 43 W. Chippewa St., "speaks to individual and collective experiences of the pandemic."

The Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at ECMC, a member of the Healogics network, is helping raise awareness of the risks of chronic wounds during the eighth annual Wound Care Awareness Week, June 7-11. Healogics established Wound Care Awareness in 2014 to bring attention to the growing need for wound care and the nearly 7 million Americans currently living with nonhealing wounds.

Congressman Brian Higgins and New York State Sen. Tim Kennedy say the Skyway project will remain on hold until the state addresses the needs of the community. They are calling for several transportation improvements to plan for the eventual removal of the Skyway, including removal of the tolls for Hamburg commuters.

The Erie County Department of Social Services has announced the opening of the portal for the New York State Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), which will provide income-qualified renters who experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 with up to 12 months back rent and up to three months future rent. Utility arrears assistance may also be available in some cases.
