Lions hold annual Christmas party

On Dec. 12, the Grand Island Lions Club held its annual Christmas party at the Holiday Inn Grand Island.

One familiar face and one new face were sworn in to public office on New Year's Eve.

At a ceremony in Grand Island Town Hall, lifelong Islander Chris Aronica was sworn in to a seat on the Grand Island Town Board, and John Ceretto took his oath of office to the New York State Assembly.

Cassata, of Fichte Endl & Elmer Eyecare, takes medical mission to Dominican Republic

Grand Islander Dr. Adrienne Cassata, an optometrist with Fichte Endl & Elmer Eyecare, will take her skills and experience to benefit the less fortunate when she travels on a medical mission to the Dominican Republic in January.

U.S. Border Patrol Buffalo Sector has busy charitable month

The U.S. Border Patrol's Buffalo Sector participated in numerous charity events this month to provide assistance to local communities during the holiday season.

Buffalo Border Patrol employees donated approximately $50,000 to the Combined Federal Campaign program, which ended Dec. 15. CFC is the world's largest annual workplace charity campaign. Buffalo Sector increased its donations by $1,000 from last year's totals, which accounted for 9 percent of Western New York's CFC efforts.

Grand Island High School: DECA, Student Council help Neighbors Foundation

For the past 15 years, the GIHS DECA Club has sorted food for needy families during the holidays. The distribution place originally was at the Stony Point Road firehall, until the generosity of the community forced the Neighbors Foundation to find a larger space, the Knights of Columbus.

Grand Island Board of Education: Superintendent's contract terminated

In a surprise addition to Monday evening's agenda, the Grand Island Board of Education voted to terminate the contract of Interim Superintendent of Schools Robert Christmann.

Christmann officially resigned as superintendent of schools on Oct. 1 after six years of service to the district. He has been functioning as interim superintendent since then and has a full-time position as executive director of the Western New York Education Services Council. His last day of service to Grand Island should be in mid-January.

State Parks to issue snowmobile use permits

Beaver Island State Park is currently issuing permits that will allow snowmobilers to use the more than 12 miles of designated and signed snowmobile trails on state park property located on Grand Island. The trails will be open between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. beginning on Dec. 15. Snowmobiling is not allowed within Beaver Island State Park.
iPad pilot project integrates technology in classroom

This year, select classes at Grand Island High School will participate in an iPad pilot project. As the district recently invested in a set of iPads for each of the buildings, this was an ideal opportunity to build teacher capacity and comfort with integrating technology using this tool in the classroom.

State Police complete Thanksgiving Traffic Safety Initiative

New York State Police in Zone II conducted a five-day traffic safety initiative from Nov. 21 to 25. Zone II covers Erie and Wyoming counties. Police conducted numerous traffic details, including Operation Hang Up, which targeted distracted drivers, DWI checkpoints, DWI saturation details, and speed details on the area Interstates.
