The Buffalo Launch Club on Grand Island followed the state and county mandate for all restaurants to close its doors in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once restaurants offered takeout and delivery services in the weeks following, the BLC began brainstorming on how it could do the same and provide opportunities for some of its furloughed restaurant staff.

On Friday, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz signed an emergency order to modify section 2511 of the Erie County Charter and extend the administration's deadline for completing a plan to close an anticipated budget deficit caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The order extends the deadline for completing a plan from seven days to 30 days and allows for potential, as-yet-unrealized federal assistance to be factored in.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn on Wednesday announced a total of 21 convicted defendants with 45 days or less remaining on their sentences have been released from the custody of Erie County jails in an effort to reduce inmate populations and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The family-owned and operated Hartman's Distilling Co. on Chicago Street in Buffalo, which normally focuses on the production of bourbon, rye, vodka, gin and craft cocktails, has shifted much of its production to bottles of hand sanitizers because of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, it is donating one bottle of hand sanitizer for each one it sells.

On Monday, the Erie County COVID-19 Business Task Force announced several new initiatives aimed at helping local businesses impacted by the COVID-19 shutdown, including the hard-hit agribusiness sector. In partnership with the Task Force, the Erie County Office of Agriculture has developed an "Erie Grown" website to promote the purchase of local and regional farm products by linking consumers with available local food products, support farmers navigating the pandemic and provide a resource hub for consumers and growers.

On Monday, The Town Board of Grand Island held its second virtual meeting via its YouTube channel because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the state of emergency declared by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo last month. During the pre-meeting workshop session, each councilmember and Supervisor John C. Whitney, P.E., discussed an ability to involve residents virtually with the town's various public meetings and hearings.

After getting over the disappointment that an elaborate unveiling and dedication of a life-sized statue of Grand Island's World War II hero, Pvt. Charles N. DeGlopper, has been postponed until June 5, 2021, the memorial volunteer committee was hard at work this week planning the completion of its fundraising goals.

Many saw the announcement earlier this month that the Island Deli & Meat Market was temporarily closing due to the economic and health ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. Longtime Grand Island resident Richard Gurbacki saw the announcement and placed a call to Eric Berger, the owner, and Tracy Crouse, the manager of Island Deli, and asked what would happen to the food that would not be used when the business was closed.

The pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing response to it in Erie County are reaching beyond the immediate need to treat and care for coronavirus victims. The pandemic is now impacting the county's budget, as well, with unbudgeted-for pandemic response equipment and personnel costs adding millions of dollars in expense to the county budget, even as sales tax receipts shrink due to business closures under shutdowns like "NY PAUSE." While some amount of federal relief funding is expected, that funding by itself will not solve the looming fiscal crisis, leaving an increasing likelihood that ongoing county functions and services will be impacted across all departments due to the fiscal stress that COVID-19 response is putting on the county budget.

The Erie County Department of Senior Services announced the expansion of the "Go and Dine" program. Four meal vouchers have been made available to participants each month and can be used at locally owned and operated participating restaurants. Due to COVID-19, the department is expanding the program to eight meal vouchers per month. It is also looking for new restaurants to expand its range across Erie County.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Thursday issued a local emergency order regarding the usage of face coverings and masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended wearing cloth face coverings that cover the nose and mouth in order to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus as an additional public health measure along with social distancing, frequent hand washing, and other preventive actions.
