Grand Island businesses help Buffalo's east side

Many saw the announcement earlier this month that the Island Deli & Meat Market was temporarily closing due to the economic and health ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. Longtime Grand Island resident Richard Gurbacki saw the announcement and placed a call to Eric Berger, the owner, and Tracy Crouse, the manager of Island Deli, and asked what would happen to the food that would not be used when the business was closed.
COVID-19 pandemic, response putting pressure on Erie County budget

The pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing response to it in Erie County are reaching beyond the immediate need to treat and care for coronavirus victims. The pandemic is now impacting the county's budget, as well, with unbudgeted-for pandemic response equipment and personnel costs adding millions of dollars in expense to the county budget, even as sales tax receipts shrink due to business closures under shutdowns like "NY PAUSE." While some amount of federal relief funding is expected, that funding by itself will not solve the looming fiscal crisis, leaving an increasing likelihood that ongoing county functions and services will be impacted across all departments due to the fiscal stress that COVID-19 response is putting on the county budget.

Erie County Senior Services expands 'Go and Dine' program

The Erie County Department of Senior Services announced the expansion of the "Go and Dine" program. Four meal vouchers have been made available to participants each month and can be used at locally owned and operated participating restaurants. Due to COVID-19, the department is expanding the program to eight meal vouchers per month. It is also looking for new restaurants to expand its range across Erie County.
ECMC debuts virtual ER visits

Erie County Medical Center Corp. on Wednesday announced it has launched a virtual ER care platform to provide video and telephonic visits for remote emergency room visits, in addition to previously established virtual care outpatient services.

Poloncarz issues emergency order on use of face masks

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Thursday issued a local emergency order regarding the usage of face coverings and masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended wearing cloth face coverings that cover the nose and mouth in order to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus as an additional public health measure along with social distancing, frequent hand washing, and other preventive actions.
Attorney General James secures full refunds for all Fantasy Island consumers

Erie County offers updates on resources, recreation

As of noon today, we have received reports of 499 total positive COVID-19 cases in Erie County residents. Eight Erie County residents have died, and 53 people have recovered. There are currently 438 people in isolation.
EC Parks to close disc golf courses in response to COVID-19

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry announced disc golf courses at Chestnut Ridge, Emery, Ellicott Creek and Como Lake parks will be closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and due to concerns about safe social distancing while playing. New signage will be installed at each disc golf course advising of the closing, and baskets will be removed and stored until the courses are reopened.

Six local newsrooms in New York were selected to receive almost $30,000 in funding - CNY Latino, Examiner Media, Niagara Frontier Publications, Spotlight Newspapers, Wallkill Valley Publications Inc., and Watertown Daily Times, with each of these recipients getting $5,000. In this first round, 50 local newsrooms across the U.S. and Canada are receiving $5,000 grants to help cover unexpected costs associated with covering the crisis in their communities. Additional recipients will be announced in the coming weeks.
