Second phase of $2 million historic restoration project begins at Buffalo History Museum

The Buffalo History Museum will begin the next phase of restoration to the lower level of its National Historic Landmark Building. Work focuses on improving guest amenities, including new restrooms and an HVAC system. At the end of this phase of construction, the museum's lower level will be restored to the original vision of architect George Cary, with an expansive 4,400-square-foot gallery.

Beginning Monday and concluding on Sunday, March 7, Island residents are encouraged to donate the basic needs of new and unused underclothing and socks to benefit homeless men, women and children in Niagara Falls, Buffalo and surrounding areas.

Chris Taylor is a lifelong Grand Island resident who followed in the footsteps of family members who served their country in a branch of the armed forces when he joined the United States Air Force upon graduating from Grand Island High School in 1999. He left the Island with the memory of his uncle, Army Sgt. Philip C. Taylor, heavy on his heart. Sgt. Taylor was one of the first U.S. soldiers killed on Cambodian soil during an air strike at the tail end of the Vietnam War in 1971.

A press release noted, "After consulting with local infectious disease and medical experts, ECDOH decided to distribute next week's NYS-directed vaccine allocation to hospitals for people with comorbid conditions. As of this media release, ECDOH has not been notified of the vaccine allotment for this population for the week of Feb. 14. Hospitals will evaluate inpatients during their hospital stay and vaccinate those who are most at-risk due to one or more comorbidities. Hospitals will also identify outpatients with significant comorbidities, such as those accessing specialty clinics, and offer them COVID-19 vaccine."

NYSDOH awards grant to ECMC to eliminate hepatitis C

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) AIDS Institute has again awarded a $1.5 million Eliminating Hepatitis C by Improving Access to Care and Treatment grant to Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) Corp.'s Center for Hepatology Care. The center was previously funded by the same state source from 2015-20.

Modified Relay For Life tentatively scheduled

The 2021 version of Relay For Life, tentatively scheduled for June 4, is expected to look far different from previous versions of the event, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We are hoping for an in-person event, but it is doubtful that can happen because of New York State protocols, American Cancer Society protocols, and people's comfort levels," said Lynn Marston Dingey, one of three co-chairs of Relay For Life.

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announced last year it will offer the traditional, on-site make-it, take-it programs as take-it, make-it virtual programs to be held online via Zoom. These one-night workshops include a succulent garden workshop, a terrarium workshop and a mini-garden workshop. Also brand new to the educational programs are botanical demonstrations. These low-cost, one-hour demonstrations will cover orchid repotting, spring floral arrangements and a bonsai demonstration.

Grand Island man sentenced for setting fire inside his apartment

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn on Thursday announced 35-year-old Robert L. Shoemaker of Grand Island was virtually sentenced that afternoon by Erie County Court Judge Suzanne Maxwell Barnes to a determinate sentence of three-and-a-half years in prison followed by two-and-a-half years of post-release supervision.

In excess of 150,000 pounds of ice will be carved into more than 90 sculptures at the Hamburg Fairgrounds as part of "The Ice Sculpting Masters Winter Wonderland" drive-thru, a brand-new event produced by The Ice Farm.
