Town Board closes in on Solar Law amendments

The Town Board on Monday set in motion plans to finalize amendments to its 2017 solar law through a series of special workshop meetings scheduled for June. The goal is to hold a public hearing, then vote on the amended law at its regular July 19 Town Board meeting.
Free food drive-thru at Trinity Church

Dunkin' provides gift cards to Erie County Department of Health COVID-19 vaccination program

Erie County and the Erie County Department of Health announced Dunkin' will provide 2,000 gift cards (valued at $5 each) for distribution at county-run COVID-19 vaccine clinics starting Tuesday, May 25. These cards will be given to youth ages 12 and older as they complete the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, with a second dose at ECDOH clinics.

Billoni and James Overfield, publisher and editor of "The Seasons of Buffalo Baseball 1857-2020," will present a virtual event inspired by the December 2020 Major League Baseball decision to officially recognize the Negro League clubs as MLB teams — 100 years after their creation. The Erie County Soil and Water Conservation District's annual summer fish stocking program has begun. Landowners looking to restock their warm/cool water ponds can place orders for largemouth bass and/or fathead minnows through Monday, July 12, with pick-up scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at the district office in East Aurora.

The annual Rotary Club of Grand Island Shred-it! event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 12, behind KeyBank in the Tops Market Plaza parking lot on Grand Island Boulevard. Patrons will receive assured and confidential document destruction of all their papers. As done in 2020, it will be drive-thru, in-vehicle service.

Erie County's ongoing bicentennial celebration got a hoppy boost with the introduction of Flying Bison Brewery's "Parks and Rec Pilsener," a special-edition bicentennial brew that is now available for purchase locally. Crafted with hops grown in Eden, the tasty local libation was created by Flying Bison as a part of the county's bicentennial celebration, which began April 2 and will continue through April 2022.

Catholic Charities: HOPE Day 2021 nets $317,228 for annual Appeal

HOPE Day, the annual 24-hour match challenge day of giving to benefit Appeal 2021, brought in $260,016 on May 14. Matching funds of $57,212 added to this total increase HOPE Day's grand total to $317,228, toward the annual Appeal's $10 million goal in support of Catholic Charities and the "Fund for the Faith."
New cases per 100,000 residents over 7 days drop below 100 for Erie County

The Erie County Department of Health announced that, with reported COVID-19 cases through Thursday, the rate for new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the past seven days is 91. This means that, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention thresholds for community transmission, Erie County is now considered in a "substantial" category of COVID-19 risk, down from a "high" level.
DEC, EPA: Construction underway in Niagara River habitat improvement project

The Erie County Department of Health will begin providing COVID-19 vaccine to youth ages 12-15 at its scheduled Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine clinics. This follows the recommendations of the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State Department of Health, and their reviews of clinical trial data for safety and efficacy in that age group.

Friend remembers Trotter as leader, admirable soldier

Rich Trotter, Emerson Gloss and Ray Sommer Jr. all received their draft notices during the Vietnam War on the same day, Oct. 26, 1966, four months after they made history as members of the first graduating class from Grand Island High School. Before they all departed for basic training, a party was held at the Island Lanes, and they all received good wishes from everyone.
