Niagara University announced that Jeff and Mary Helen Holzschuh have pledged a gift of $10 million to the university. In recognition of the gift, the university will rename the college of business to the Holzschuh College of Business Administration. With this generous gift, Jeff and Mary Helen become the largest benefactors in the history of the university.

Niagara County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti recently announced Capt. Matthew Grainge and Lt. Daniel Zimmerman were recognized by the National Sheriffs' Association as the Explorer Post Advisors of the Year for 2022. Grainge and Zimmerman have been advisers to NCSO Explorer Post 2911 since 2016.
Andres says warehouse proposal should be approved

Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres, chairman of the county's Economic Development Committee, on Tuesday said the proposed site for the new warehouse project (of which Amazon is the potential tenant) was deemed shovel-ready by Empire State Development a decade ago and, as such, the project absolutely needs to be approved if the county wants to maintain credibility with national and international site selectors.
Pontoon removal at Niagara Falls

Over the next day or so, New York's Army National Guard is using a CH-47F Chinook heavy lift helicopter to remove a pontoon from a portion of the New York Power Authority's "ice boom" at Niagara Falls. The New York State Park Police is teaming with U.S. Army aviators from the New York Army National Guard's Detachment 1, Company "B" 3rd Battalion on the operation, which began Tuesday morning.

New building at NCCC to house Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy

A new training facility for the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy will be built on the Sanborn campus of Niagara County Community College. An estimated $2.27 million for the building was appropriated in the SUNY building fund adopted by the state budget passage a few weeks ago.

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh joined staff from the Niagara County Parks Department to plant a tree in Oppenheim Park to celebrate Arbor Day. The Parks Department will be planting more than 200 trees this season through a forest restoration grant that is part of the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

As I am writing this column, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Western New York, according to AAA, is $4.24 a gallon. One year ago, that same gallon of gas cost $2.86. Clearly, the rise in gas prices, and the overall inflation of prices on everything, is hitting the wallets of families across Niagara County.
'Deposits for Food' reaches $100,000 in giving to area food pantries

In August 2013, Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees put into action an idea he had for some time. A recent retiree, Sarkees began collecting bottles and cans at the Lewiston Jazz Festival, with the idea of turning them in to raise funds for local Niagara County food pantries. So began his "Deposits 4 Food" initiative.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the fishing season for northern pike, pickerel, tiger muskellunge and walleye opens on May 1. Fishing regulation changes implemented earlier this year replaced the floating "Saturday" season openers with a fixed date, in addition to other improvements to enhance fishing opportunities across the state.
