Niagara County Legislator Owen Steed to host community forum on county services

Niagara County Legislator Owen Steed will host a community forum for residents to learn about many of the services available to them through Niagara County and partner agencies. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Doris Jones Family Resource Center, 2001 9th St., Niagara Falls.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $248,077 awarded to Native American Community Services of Erie and Niagara Counties Inc. (NACS). Funded by the American Rescue Plan and awarded through the Administration for Native Americans (ANA), the grant supports tribes and organizations seeking to ensure the survival and vitality of Native American languages.

During Monday's Town Board meeting, Wheatfield Supervisor Don MacSwan announced the 2022 tentative budget is set to feature a slight tax increase primarily meant to cover rising costs related to garbage and recycling services. The town had also approved a similar increase last year.

Two weekends ago, a handful of volunteers joined the crews from Painters Plus to help out this year's winner of Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Paint Exteriors), an annual citywide contest that offers a free exterior home paint job to homeowners in need. Painter's Plus owner Jesse Gooch said this year's Project H.O.P.E., now in its 11th year, was perhaps its most unique yet.

Home haunt in North Tonawanda opens

Back in July, I wrote about the terrible storms and flooding that did tremendous property damage across Niagara County. The torrential rainfall hit in a line from Lewiston to Lockport, wreaking havoc on many areas below the escarpment. Thank you to everyone who took time to file damage reports with Niagara County Emergency Services.
