Packing life into her years: Esther Loucks turns 100

Esther Loucks, a North Tonawanda native, recently celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family at Wheatfield Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Tonawanda. Loucks has deep roots in the area and has enjoyed 100 years of giving back to her church, traveling the world and staying active!

Carrousel Museum to host Chiavetta's fundraiser

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is holding a curbside Chiavetta's chicken dinner pick-up from 3-6 p.m. Friday Oct. 9. Dinners are $12 each in advance, and include Famous Chiavetta's Chicken, potato salad, coleslaw and a dinner. A portion of each dinner sold will help the museum to recover some of the lost event revenue the museum faces due to COVID-19.

United Way kicks off 2020 campaign

Last Friday, the United Way of Greater Niagara announced the start of its 2020 fundraising campaign at the Four Points Sheridan Hotel in Niagara Falls. The organization says this year's campaign, which will run through Nov. 30, is more critical than ever as community groups continue to struggle with the effects of COVID-19. Funds raised throughout will continue to support 29 agencies focused on a spectrum of human services throughout the Niagara Region.
Land conservancy files suit against seller; current buyer speaks out

The story surrounding the sale of a former farmland site in the Town of Niagara took a number of interesting turns this week. The Town of Niagara Farmland Conservancy says it will file a lawsuit against the George Mannoe family, the former owners of a 26-acre parcel located on the east side of Miller Road after they decided to sell to another buyer, Alexis Johnson.

Edward Tase Jr. of Lockport was elected first vice president of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York at its 148th annual convention, which was held virtually (due to COVID-19) Aug. 22. Tase has served in a number of leadership roles within FASNY, most recently as a member of its board of directors, and now assumes new statewide responsibilities on behalf of New York's volunteer fire service.
NCSO: Lost, elderly female in Wheatfield area

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is currently searching for a lost woman described as white, elderly, 86 years old. She is believed to be in a wooded area near her 2000 gold Mercury Sable 4-door. She was last seen wearing a white sweater and tan pants.

United Way of Greater Niagara (UWGN) on Friday announced the launch of its 2020 campaign, with Nicolas Maniccia (KeyBank) and Denise Abbott (DeGraff Medical Park) as this year's campaign co-chairs. Last weekend, Jesse Gooch, owner of Painters Plus, several of the company's employees, and a handful of volunteers washed, primed and painted the house of Steven and Cindy Kureczka of Zimmerman Street in North Tonawanda, the chosen winners for the 10th annual Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Paint Exteriors). The project is an annual citywide contest that offers a free exterior home paint job to homeowners in need.

Muzzleloader course to be given in Wheatfield

Hunting season is almost here and the Firearms Permit Review Board of Wheatfield will be giving its annual muzzleloader coarse at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Community Center located behind the Wheatfield Town Hall. A certificate will be issued to those taking this course as a requirement for a muzzleloader discharge permit.

Carnegie Art Center launches a 2021 calendar featuring artwork by 12 local artists

The Carnegie Art Center is selling printed 2021 calendars as a fundraiser. The calendars feature a different work of art for each month of the year created by 12 artists living and working in Western New York. Calendars can be pre-ordered on the center's website anytime and will be available for delivery and pick-up in mid-September. Sales from the calendars will support the Carnegie Art Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Memorial names Wind head of sports medicine services
