The North Tonawanda Police Department issued a public information announcement via its Facebook page regarding recent amendments to the city's solid waste code. On April 20, the North Tonawanda City Council approved an amendment to Chapter 45 of the City Code regarding solid waste, which imposed stricter penalties for violating new bulk pickup rules.

Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced the Niagara County Sheriff's Office has joined Neighbors, which is Ring's app-based neighborhood watch program. The Neighbors app has the ability to alert users to crime and safety events within a radius of up to 5 miles of their home, and allows them to share videos or information about crime and safety events in their neighborhood anonymously.

On March 31, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation legalizing adult use of cannabis throughout New York. During the announcement, Cuomo said the development of an adult-use cannabis industry in New York has, "The potential to create significant economic opportunities for New Yorkers and the state." Its estimated the industry could bring in $350 million in tax revenue each year and potentially create 30,000 to 60,000 jobs.

A site plan from Stavatti Aerospace Ltd. to begin initial construction and repairs at the former Army Reserve base located in the municipality was approved by both the Town of Niagara and Niagara County planning boards last week. The approved plans allow Stavatti to begin remediation efforts to bring building No. 4, a 37,500-square-foot hangar, up to code.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski announced the Veterans Service Agency would begin in-person office hours at the Trott Access Center in Niagara Falls beginning next week. The Verizon Media Community Benefit Fund for Lockport and the Verizon Media Community Benefit Fund for Niagara County - Empire State Development, two grant funds administered by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, are now accepting applications from nonprofits serving Niagara County. The Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis Club will host its May Day basket raffle from 1-3 p.m. May 1. The event will be outside at the Lions 5 Senses Park located at 6535 Ward Road, in the Town of Wheatfield. New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced a $4 million agreement they said "resolves years of hazardous waste disposal and oil spill contamination at the former Tonawanda Forge site in Tonawanda, New York." The agreement stipulates that American Axle & Manufacturing agrees to compensate the state of New York for costs associated with the state's cleanup of contamination at the site.

The North Tonawanda High School multiclass reunion committee met April 15 to determine whether or not to hold the annual event. With the pandemic and its concerns, testing, social distancing and adhering to state mandates, it was decided in the best interest of all to not hold the event this year.

Reacting to an overwhelming number of people who showed up for the Niagara County Department of Motor Vehicles' first walk-in hours since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said future walk-in hours would be limited to Niagara County residents only, with a limit of two transactions per visit.

The ballot is taking shape in the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District for the annual budget vote to be held Tuesday, May 18. The Board of Education recently passed motions setting its expenditure budget for the 2021-22 school year at $79,222,507, and the tax levy limit to $34,720,519 - an increase of 1.99% from last year. Both motions were passed unanimously.
