Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday, June 26, and Sunday, June 27, is a "Free Fishing Weekend" in New York - the second of six "Free Fishing Days" recognized across the state each year.

EPA: $500,000 in supplemental funds to cleanup & redevelop contaminated brownfields sites in Niagara County

On Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $11.6 million in supplemental funding to help transform communities by cleaning up contaminated brownfields properties with $500,000 going to the Niagara County Center for Economic Development.

USA Niagara Development Corp. (USAN) on Thursday released its strategy for the redevelopment of several state-owned properties in downtown Niagara Falls acquired through Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Buffalo Billion initiative. The strategy recommends a range of intermediate steps and attainable site development guidelines for "reimagining a vibrant downtown, while building momentum for sustainable and dynamic long-term development."
Niagara County announces Project Awareness pharmacy label campaign

The Niagara County Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services (NCDMH), in partnership with the Niagara County Opioid Task Force (OASIS) and local pharmacies, on Thursday announced the launch of Project Awareness, a campaign to provide the Niagara County Crisis Services 24-hour phone line number on prescription medications that have a high potential for abuse and overdose.

Niagara County looking to move Law Enforcement Academy to NCCC

DEC cites Cascades facility for noxious odors; company working to find long-term solution

Recently, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation served Cascades Containerboard Packaging Inc. a notice of violation after receiving numerous complaints from residents in the Town of Niagara, City of Niagara Falls and even as far away as Sanborn throughout the month of May. The agency said the company was in violation of Air Pollution Control Law, Article 19 of the Environmental Conservation Law (ECL).

USAF Civil Air Patrol cadets to raise large flag at Stavatti Niagara

USAF Civil Air Patrol cadets from the Niagara Falls Composite Squadron No. 1 will participate in raising the 15-foot stars and stripes at Stavatti's newly acquired facility at 9400 Porter Road in the Town of Niagara. The flag-raising, set for noon Sunday, June 13, will be the first time in more than 17 years that "Old Glory" is permanently flown from the 70-foot mast - since the former U.S. Army Reserve Center was closed and sold to the Town of Niagara.
New York state announces $200 million in additional food aid for June

The New York state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive at least the maximum allowable level of food benefits for June, a benefits distribution that will push more than $200 million in federal aid into the state's recovering economy.
Niagara County encourages Purple Heart veterans to come forward

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said Niagara County will once again honor Purple Heart veterans by adding their name to county's "Book of Honor" at a ceremony to be held Aug. 7. The county is asking any Purple Heart veterans or their family members who have not yet come forward to please do so by June 11 in order to be part of this year's ceremony.

DEC takes enforcement action against Cascades Containerboard Packaging Inc.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued a notice of violation (NOV) to Cascades Containerboard Packaging Inc., in the City of Niagara Falls, after the agency determined the facility was generating a persistent noxious odor that resulted in dozens of complaints from area residents, business owners, and state and local officials.

On Tuesday, June 1, the LGBTQ+ flag was raised in a number of notable locations throughout Niagara County in honor of Pride Month. Flag-raising ceremonies were held at Niagara Falls City Hall, Lockport City Hall, Niagara Falls State Park and, for the first time this year, Artpark.

Aquarium of Niagara to offer extended summer hours & daily sea lion demonstrations

On Saturday, May 29, the Aquarium of Niagara will transition to a summer schedule featuring extended operating hours. Sunday through Thursday, the venue will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Extended hours will run through Labor Day.
