Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), with support from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, are pleased to announce the sixth round of competitive grants through the New York State Park and Trail Partnership Grants program, funded through the state Environmental Protection Fund.

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, announced federal funding totaling more than $34,373 for several Western New York fire departments toward the purchase of personal protective equipment to keep firefighters and the community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Carnegie Art Center has 'The Flow Through Wanakena Exhibition'

The Carnegie Art Center is hosting "The Flow Through Wanakena Exhibition" through Jan. 30 in the Rotunda Gallery space. This exhibition features photography by Michael Mandolfo. All are welcome to view the exhibition during their gallery hours of 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. There is no charge to attend the exhibition.

Due to the uncertainty of the restrictions going forward for COVID-19, unfortunately the Mayor's Charity Snowflake Ball will not be held in February. Since masks and social distancing are in effect, as well as groups no larger than 25 people gathering, the ball seems impossible to host this year.

Niagara County Community College will begin the spring 2021 semester on Jan. 19 at both the Sanborn campus and Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. Most classes will operate virtually through Feb. 1 while a limited number of SUNY approved high-contact labs will take place in-person throughout the semester.

On Dec. 14, State University of New York Chancellor Dr. Jim Malatras hosted a virtual Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Honors Awards ceremony recognizing the achievements of 45 students from 49 SUNY campuses statewide. Elaine Champagne-Lewis of Niagara County Community College was chosen to receive the 2020 Norman R. McConney, Jr. Award for EOP Student Excellence, which celebrates EOP students who have overcome significant obstacles in life to achieve their educational and personal goals.

Niagara County clerk reminds pistol permitholders to recertify

Niagara County Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Thursday reminded pistol permitholders that, under the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of Jan. 15, 2013, pistol permit holders must recertify every five years with the New York State Police Office. That means those who received their permits in 2016 must recertify by the date of issuance on their permit.

Niagara County approves funding for vaccination hires

The Niagara County Legislature unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night to allocate $101,458 from its contingency fund to create and fill part-time positions that will help administer the COVID-19 vaccine to the public when the vaccine doses become available. The county intends to vaccinate the public through point-of-dispensing sites (PODS).
Niagara County: Driver's license expiration extended again

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Tuesday said Gov. Andrew Cuomo has issued executive order 202.87, which extends the expiration dates on licenses and permits that expired after March 1, 2020, to Jan. 29, 2021. In addition, the executive order also continues to require all in-person transactions at DMVs be done by appointment only.

Brian D. Seaman, with wife Donna by his side, was sworn in as Niagara County district attorney on Wednesday, Dec. 30. The oath of office was conducted by Niagara County Court Judge Matthew J. Murphy III - who himself served as Niagara County DA for 16 years, and hired Seaman as an assistant DA in 2006.
Rapid COVID-19 testing now available at WellNow Urgent Care centers

High school students get jumpstart on college at NCCC

At a time when the pandemic has brought challenges for many in the academic realm, Niagara County Community College is improving access to higher education for high school students through the college acceleration program (CAP). CAP allows students to take college courses at their own high school, following NCCC curriculum. In essence, the dual-enrolled high school students are getting a head start on their college careers.
