The holidays will be a little happier for those living on the margins of society, thanks to the students in Niagara University's Student Nurses Association. The group has been collecting canned goods, blankets, toiletries and personal hygiene products that it will donate to Community Missions of Niagara Frontier Inc. at the end of the semester.

The Niagara County Bar Association had its holiday party and toy drive on Dec. 14 to benefit the Niagara County Giving Tree. The organization collected toys from its members at the event, and the board of directors raised more than $3,000 for gifts.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $24.3 million has been awarded to support 56 municipalities and not-for-profit organizations for park improvements, heritage area enhancements and historic preservation projects through round XII of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. The grants from the Environmental Protection Fund are administered by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

The First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston will open its doors to the community on Christmas Eve. All are welcome to attend the candlelight service. "Proclaim the Wondrous Birth - a Christmas Eve Service of music and story," will include a choral concert at 5:30 p.m. featuring Robert Hull, music director for the church and renowned Western New York organist, directing the choir. The service will follow at 6 p.m.

The trustees of the New York Power Authority on Tuesday approved a new, five-year contract agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), a labor union representing more than 570 electricians, line persons, and other skilled craft employees at NYPA, the nation's largest state public power entity providing nearly a quarter of New York's electricity.

Women United of Greater Niagara's annual personal hygiene drive has wrapped up for the year. On Wednesday, Woman United volunteers gathered at the United Way office in Sanborn to separate and sort the estimated $5,000 of donated products for distribution to the nine local nonprofit agencies the drive supports.

Niagara Hospice announced the Hospice House expanded residential wing is now open to admit patients at 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport. After a year of construction, the six new residential patient suites bring the total at the facility to 16, the maximum allowed by New York.

Niagara University announced it has partnered with Montante Solar to develop and maintain a solar array on its Lewiston campus. An early morning fire on Nov. 30 ravaged 744, 746 and 748 Center St., the site of The Vintage Barber, Soully Created and Sue's Frame of Mind. In battling the blaze, first responders from Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 and members from a half-dozen supporting companies had to break glass, pull off siding, cut into the roof and pump in copious amounts of water.

Each year, the Niagara Falls Fire Department hosts a large fundraiser to benefit kids in the community by providing Christmas toys to those in need. Organizers said they hope to raise $90,000 now in year 94.

Niagara Falls firefighters delivered bags of toys to the Niagara County Courthouse rotunda right before the meeting of the County Legislature on Tuesday night. This was in support of the Christmas giving tree, where collections support Casey House Shelter, Twin Cities Outreach and the Salvation Army.
