To kick off the annual Lewiston Art Festival, New York State Assemblyman John Ceretto presented the Lewiston Council on the Arts with a proclamation on Thursday at the Hennepin Park Gazebo. Ceretto paid tribute to the LCA, which has hosted the Art Festival for 44 years.

With pleasant weather on the outside and few residents inside, the Porter Town Board session was short in duration Monday at Town Hall. In stark contrast to July's heated session on the boating law controversy that had the meeting room overflowing, this one lasted well under an hour. But it did include productive discussion and some work done also.

The Youngstown, Wilson and Lewiston Lions clubs combined to help the needy and make a difference. Their fifth annual Golf Classic was a success, with a portion of the proceeds directed to the Vision Beyond Site Foundation.

The Town of Lewiston has been awarded $340,000 in Greenway funding in order to enhance the Niagara Greenway corridor, by creating new town projects and improving upon existing ones. The Lewiston Council on the Arts received $15,000 toward this year's Lewiston Jazz Festival, and $325,000 will be used toward the War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, and State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-I-Newfane, today announced their joint "Empower Niagara" petition drive. The petitions, which call for a Niagara County resident to be appointed to the New York Power Authority Board of Trustees, will be hand delivered by Ceretto and Maziarz to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Michael Roemer, 2011 chairman of the Lewiston Kiwanis Peach Festival, announced the festival's annual cheerleading competition will take place on Friday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m. on the Academy Park stage. The Kiwanis Club encourages all Western New York and Canadian high school cheerleading groups to enter this fun, cost-free competition.

An 1812 American flag, rocking chairs and a calendar of events are among the new changes on display at the Village of Lewiston Welcome Center at Academy Park. Deputy Mayor Bruce Sutherland said a team of volunteers is now in place and enjoying interacting with tourists -- including a couple that recently visited from Denmark.

The Youngstown Free Library One World Many Stories Drama Club will present "A World of Stories" on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Red Brick School Village Center gym. The Town of Lewiston Town Board lent its approval last month to three projects aimed at enhancing the Niagara River Greenway corridor. Now under consideration before the Niagara River Greenway Commission is a $500,000 proposal to fund three projects: an ice rink in Academy Park, Artpark event programming and Lewiston Council on the Arts event programming.

Lewiston Music promoter Steve Goodman's debut "Hot Pepper & Salsa Festival" has been pushed back a few weeks. The Village of Lewiston approved use of Academy Park on Aug. 16 and 17 for the event, but that was too early for the man who just hosted the Lewiston Music Festival on July 8 and 9.

On July 13, the ladies nine and 18 hole leagues at the Niagara Falls Country Club got together to hold the annual "Go For Pink" golf tournament. The proceeds raised from the entry fee, hole sponsors, Chinese auction, raffle and donations were more than $6,000 and presented to Mount St. Mary's Hospital & Health Center's Breast Care Center.
