St. Francis Guild plans barbecue to benefit Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center

The terrific smell of barbecue chicken and ribs will be in the air at Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center on Friday, May 11. From 3 to 6 p.m., the St. Francis Guild will host its 14th annual chicken and ribs barbecue. Lewiston's The Brickyard Pub & B.B.Q will cook the food.

Village of Lewiston approves 2012-13 budget

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees approved the municipality's 2012-13 budget at a special meeting Monday night. The total budget rose from $3,126,609 to $3,298,631, but the tax rate remains $7.12 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Lewiston Relay For Life educates volunteers

The Lewiston Relay For Life held its second informational meeting on Wednesday, April 25. The topic of the meeting was: "Where does the money go?"

The theme for this year's Lewiston Relay For Life is "Mission Possible." The theme will be used throughout the event from decorating tent sites to when teams take their first lap.

Julie Kumiega of American Cancer Society Family and Patient Services talked numbers to the group. The amount of people in Niagara County diagnosed with cancer on a yearly basis is more than 1,000. About 480 women are diagnosed and 638 men.

What is the difference between a steelhead trout and a rainbow trout? Around here in our watershed you could say they are the same, and people like to call them all "steelhead." Maybe it just sounds better. Genetically, they are both the same.

Working in conjunction with the hospital's newly established Center for Women, Mount St. Mary's will accept four students to participate in a paid maternity nursing externship program this summer.
