Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue will be present with adoptable dogs this Saturday, March 1, from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Pet Supplies Plus location at 2952 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst. Dogs Angel, Blu, Kirby, Reba, Rudy, Simba and Snuggles will be on hand; photos and information on these and all their animals are available online at www.heartofniagara.org.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston voted Tuesday to amend a portion of the municipal law dealing with sign regulations. The most notable changes include prohibition of A-frame or "sandwich board" signs, and stronger language banning flashing electronic and neon lights.

It has been said that, in the early 1800s, one of the favorite places in the Village of Lewiston was Hustler's Tavern. It was so popular that, in 1813, when Lewiston was burned by British forces in retaliation for the U.S. attack on Niagara-On-The-Lake, Hustler's Tavern was the only building spared.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital has received full accreditation status from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care as a "chest pain" center. Mount St. Mary's is the only hospital in Niagara County with this prestigious accreditation and one of only two in all of Western New York.

"Taste Niagara 2014," a celebration of local foods and beverages, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the state-of-the-art Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, 28 Old Falls St., Niagara Falls. The culinary institute is home to Niagara County Community College's culinary arts, baking and pastry arts program.
Hosted by the Niagara County Farm Bureau, in association with the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Niagara County, the event is open to the public. It will feature multiple food stations.

Town of Lewiston Councilman Ernest C. Palmer announced Friday he will give up his seat on the Town Board effective next Friday, Feb. 21.
Palmer, a Republican councilman since 2007, said he has new projects he would like to pursue, and looks forward to traveling and spending time with his family. A tax accountant, Palmer said he wishes to spend more time growing his business.
"It is time to give someone else an opportunity to bring fresh ideas and energy to the board," he said.

The event featured sample tastes from more than 20 area restaurants, plus a basket auction with row upon row of donated baskets.
