Distinguished Flying Cross awarded to local airman

Twenty-four airmen from the 4th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Florida, were awarded Distinguished Flying Crosses for four separate engagements, all of which included an AC-130 protecting friendly forces in Afghanistan.
Castellani Art Museum presents folk arts workshops at Buffalo History Museum

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University is collaborating with the Buffalo History Museum to present two folk arts workshops this summer. Both programs will be held at the Buffalo History Museum, located at 1 Museum Court (just east of Elmwood Avenue and off Nottingham Terrace, north of the Scajaquada Expressway, in the northwest corner of Delaware Park).

A press conference was held Monday to unveil the Brickyard Brewing Company's "68 Guns." The pilsner was created for this Saturday's Spirit of the '80s concert at Academy Park, which will be headlined by Mike Peters & The Alarm. A portion of the event's proceeds will benefit both the Love Hope Strength Foundation and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

On July 14 at the United Fighting Arts Federation tournament at South Point Hotel Casino and Spa in Las Vegas, Carly Presti, 17, took first place in the international training conference and championships weapons kata. Carly has been training for 12 years and is a third-degree black belt under her father, Master John Presti, owner of Presti Karate Centers.

Village of Lewiston: Frontier House scans to give detailed blueprint of building

Niagara Boundary and Mapping Services President Kenneth Lee Slaugenhoupt spent part of the past week laser-scanning the Frontier House. Working inside and outside the building, he used a FARO Laser Scanner, which, he said, is capable of collecting 488,000 measurements per minute with a tolerance of ±3mm (or 1/8 inch).
Mount St. Mary's Hospital, SEIU reach tentative agreement

Mount St. Mary's Hospital and the Service Employees International Union 1199 (SEIU) reached a tentative agreement today on a new contract that is set to expire in March 2022. Details of the contract are not being disclosed until the union members ratify the agreement. A vote is expected to take place in the next several weeks.

Congressman Chris Collins announced $84,202 in federal funding for the Olcott Fire Co. The grant was awarded through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, which is designed to help first responders improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.

The Niagara Wine Trail will sponsor the annual Niagara USA Wine Festival in Lewiston's Academy Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 28-29. It will be the 10th annual wine festival in Lewiston, promoting the local wineries in Niagara, Orleans and Monroe counties along the Niagara Wine Trail USA. The festival will run from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon until 6 p.m. Sunday.

Old Fort Niagara will host the largest War of 1812 event in its history on July 28-29. The fort was selected by the War of 1812 Grand Tactical Committee to host its biggest annual event, the War of 1812 Grand Encampment, which attracts hundreds of re-enactors from the U.S. and Canada and will feature U.S. and British land forces, naval vessels, personnel and artillery, Native allies, tactical demonstrations and living-history programming. The event is July 28-29.

DEC issues conference addresses plaintiffs' concerns on CWM

The ongoing process on deciding the long-term operations fate of CWM Chemical Services LLC took another step forward Tuesday at the Lewiston-Porter Creek Road campus. There, Administrative Law Judge Daniel O'Connell, joined by members of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Siting Board, held a daylong pre-adjudication issues conference to evaluate community concerns over CWM's filed applications.
