Mount St. Mary's Hospital to celebrate Black History Month

Mount St. Mary's Hospital will hold a special ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, as part of its Black History Month celebration. The event will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the hospital cafeteria, 5300 Military Road.
Cuomo earmarks $500,000 for Niagara County SPCA

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced nearly $4.5 million was awarded to 13 animal shelters and humane societies across the state through the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund. The funding will support construction, renovation and expansion projects that will enhance animal care and health, and help ensure adoptions for New York's dogs and cats.
'Niagara Digressions' fundraiser

Town of Porter donates to USCG Station Niagara

On Friday afternoon, the Town of Porter welcomed staff from U.S. Coast Guard Station Niagara to Porter Town Hall for the presentation of donated items to assist personnel during the government shutdown. Town of Porter Supervisor John "Duffy" Johnston said 300 pounds of food collected from the community over the past week was donated.

The Lewiston Council on the Arts recently received notification of its award of decentralization grant funding in support of a new event that will take place at Hennepin Park during the Lewiston Art Festival on Aug. 10-11. The gazebo area will be transformed into an Iroquois market, bringing to life the rich history of Native American traditions, and featuring traditional drumming, music, dance and free hands-on activities.
Lewiston: Smelt Festival moving to Academy Park

Unlike the fish it's named for, which is tiny and landlocked, the Lewiston Smelt Festival is large and needs room to expand. On Tuesday, the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce was granted permission by the Village Board to move the May 3 event from the Lewiston waterfront into Academy Park.

From 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Feb. 9, Dr. Glenda R. Rose and Dr. Thomas G. Barba of Rose Chiropractic P.C. in Lewiston will sponsor the 29th annual "Doctors with a Heart Day" for their patients. Nonperishable food items will be collected to benefit the Niagara Community Action Program (NiaCAP) food pantry in exchange for chiropractic services.

Art Festival fundraiser yields profits for hospital

Each August, the Mount St. Mary's Hospital maternity department assists with the annual hot dog sale at the Lewiston Art Festival. The event is a fundraiser coordinated by volunteers from the Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club. In a show of appreciation and community service, the club annually donates a portion of their proceeds to Mount St. Mary's.
