Niagara County to participate in statewide STOP-DWI St. Patrick's Day crackdown enforcement effort

Sheriff James R. Voutour announced Niagara County law enforcement agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving. In a combined effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives, law enforcement officers across New York State will take to the roads.

The Historical Association of Lewiston welcomed the community to the Brickyard Brewing Company on Tuesday for a special treat: Emmy Award-winning photojournalist Isadore "Izzy" Bleckman and his wife, Mary Roseberry, screened the documentary "Risking Everything: A Story of Niagara's Freedom Seekers." The 33-minute film chronicles Lewiston's role in the Underground Railroad, juxtaposing stories with sculptor Susan Geissler's work in creating the Freedom Crossing Monument.
Village of Lewiston welcomes new Frontier House ownership team

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees held a reception on Monday to thank the new Frontier House owners for purchasing the vacant building and its one acre of land. Prior to the get-together, William Paladino, Jeff Williams and Bill Game were introduced to the public at a 6 p.m. work session.

The 50th annual Olcott Polar Bear "Swim For Sight" was held Sunday afternoon on the Lake Ontario shores at Olcott Beach. Roughly 400 swimmers participated, while all types of food and vendors could be found on the hamlet's Main Street for a huge crowd of onlookers.

The Lewiston Choraleers will present an Easter program at four area churches April 6, 7, 13 and 14. The program will feature a cantata titled "Covenant of Grace" by Joseph Martin. The group said the performance "celebrates God's faithfulness and everlasting promises to his people, and serves as a testimony to God's plan of redemption for all humanity."

The Old Fort Niagara Association will host a Native American history symposium on Saturday, March 30, titled "Fort Niagara through Native Eyes" at the Tuscarora Nation House in Lewiston. Three Native American history and culture experts will present Native American history from specific time periods at Fort Niagara. The symposium will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is now open to the public.
'A Taste of Jazz' fundraiser to be held at Brickyard Brewing Co.

Preparations are underway for the 2019 Northwest Jazz Festival, which will take place Aug. 23-24 in the Village of Lewiston. It was announced Thursday The board of directors and Jazz Festival staff will hold a fundraiser, "A Taste of Jazz," from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at the Brickyard Brewing Co., 436 Center St. The event will help offset some of the costs of producing the free, two-day outdoor music festival.

Lewiston Town Board members and visitors to Monday's session at Town Hall had the opportunity to welcome the newest officers to the Lewiston Police Department. Chief Frank Previte officiated a swearing-in ceremony for new officers Mitchell Pegan, Adriano Medici and Lt. Michael Milbrand, who recently retired from the Tonawanda Police Department. All three joined the LPD on Feb. 18.
