Niagara EDGE Run/Walk set for May 19

A unique running event hosted by Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and UBMD Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine is now accepting registrations from runners and walkers of all ages. The Niagara EDGE 5K/10K Run and 1 Mile Walk will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Summit Healthplex, 6934 Williams Road, Niagara Falls.

It took only 53 seconds for the Spicey Pickle's taco-eating contest record to fall on Cinco de Mayo. Grand Island's Colton Keen polished off three handhelds in less than a minute to out-eat six other competitors on Sunday.

Higgins & local advocates detail bipartisan bill to help individuals with severe medical needs

Congressman Brian Higgins was joined Monday by representatives from People Inc., Western New York Independent Living and the National Coalition for Assistive & Rehab Technology to announce federal legislation to make it easier for individuals with significant disabilities and chronic medical conditions to access specialized wheelchairs and adaptive equipment technology. Reps. Higgins and Jim Sensenbrenner have introduced H.R. 2408, the Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act. The bipartisan bill creates a separate benefit category under Medicare to cover complex wheelchair and other adaptive equipment for people with severe medical needs.

Spalding Ace Hardware in Lockport and Standish Jones Building supply in Gasport recently presented Niagara Hospice with $1,593.43, which was raised by asking customers during the month of March to round up their change for Hospice. This year's donation topped the 2018 total by $800 - and officials said they hope to raise even more next year.

As predicted, the Lewiston Smelt Festival was about 55 and overcast on Friday. What was an unexpected surprise was the amount of mud within Academy Park, where the annual event relocated for 2019. To counter the conditions, the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce brought in an oversized party tent and buckets of wood chips.

As part of the recent "Shop Hop" event in Lewiston, the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce held a contest to name the Easter Bunny. More than 70 entries were submitted. The Chamber of Commerce staff had a hard time deciding what name would be best. After much consideration, the winning name is "Mary Hoppins."
Responders battle house fire in Youngstown
