State Parks seeks lifeguards

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced four lifeguard qualifying procedures are scheduled in the Niagara Region for the 2020 season. Lifeguard positions will be available at Beaver Island, Evangola, Woodlawn Beach Fort Niagara and Wilson-Tuscarora state parks.

Niagara County Emergency Services Director Jonathan Schultz told the Lake Ontario Planning Committee that current Lake Ontario water levels are already higher than at a similar period a year ago. Schultz said the current water level is 246.59 feet, about 9 inches above where they were on this date one year ago.

Lewiston No. 1, first-responders fight back multi-dwelling structure fire

At 10:33 p.m. Saturday, Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 was dispatched to the Woods at Blairville apartment complex in the 800 block of Oriole Lane for a reported structure fire. Crews were faced with heavy fire in two apartments upon arrival and immediately deployed to begin knocking back the flames as additional crews entered to search for anyone still inside.

HS Hoops: Wolverines slide by Gayle-less Lancers

Tuesday night, the Lewiston-Porter Lancers faced the Niagara Falls Wolverines on the hardwood without their star sophomore Roddy Gayle. Gayle was on the bench for the Lancers' battle, as he nursed an injury. And while most people counted L-P out in his absence, the Lancers gave the Wolverines everything they had. Despite the efforts, the Wolverines prevailed, 71-67, behind big nights from Taylor Sanders and Bryce Smith.
